    October 2002: ARC funded project on He* BEC We will develop one of the few metastable Helium (He*) Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC), which will have a unique magnetic confining potential. We will use this to generate independent He* BECs which we will use to measure the development of the BEC phase. We aim to answer for the first time the intriguing question: "How does a BEC develop phase?". The answer will also be important for the recently developed atom laser - with potential applications as wide-reaching as the laser - where understanding the phase coherence is important for devices such as atom interferometers. We will also use this source of large de Broglie wavelength atoms atom optics applications, and will study the He*-He* collisions which are important in determining collisional scattering length - a key parameter in the BEC formation process.
