One hundred years of Nobel Prize and Diabetes The Nobel Prize is 100 years old. The Nobel Foundation has announced the Centennial celebrations, which will be held in Stockholm and Oslo. All Nobel laureates still alive have been invited to the Centennial celebrations which will begin in the first week of December 2001 and will culminate on 10 December when the year 2001 laureates receive their prizes followed by the banquet. More than 225 laureates still alive have accepted the invitation to participate in the celebrations. The first Nobel awards were announced in 1901 in Christiania (now called Oslo) and the award function was held in Stockholm at the Royal Academy of Music (1). Several activities are planned as part of the festival. Their Majesties the King and Queen of Sweden inaugurated a Nobel Centennial exhibition on 1 April 2001 at the Old Stockholm stock exchange. This will remain as a permanent exhibition. A copy of the centennial exhibition will be inaugurated on 9 August in Oslo and will be exhibited in various parts of the world as a touring exhibition beginning in Tokyo in March 2002. In Oslo, there will be a Centennial Exhibition at the Norwegian Folk Museum and an issue of eight Nobel Peace Prize stamps and two Nobel coins, one in gold and one in silver. More than 30 Peace Prize laureates will attend the Peace Prize symposium.

Women and the Nobel Prize in Science
The Nobel Prize is named after Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor of dynamite. He died in 1896, in his will he established the most famous of all international awards the Nobel Prizes. Annual awards are given for peace, literature, and discoveries in physics, chemistry, and physiology. Economics was added in 1968. Candidates in science from all over the world are nominated for the Nobel Prize. Since 1896 only nine women have won and five women have played a critical role in winning the prize for someone else. Out of over three hundred men who have won, that means that only 3% of women have won. A topless woman is on the reverse side of the Nobel Prize medal. Is it to show how men treat women, as less than equal? Or is it to show that behind every great man, there is a women who showed him how to it? This web page takes a small look it some of the women who have won the Nobel Prize in science. Click on their name to see a detail of their lives and what they found in science to put their name into a male award club. To see more about the Nobel Prize you can go to the Nobel Prize web page.

Biology is the scientific study of living things. There are more than 10 million species of living things on the earth. They range in size from microscopic bacteria to huge blue whales and towering redwood trees. Living things also differ greatly in where and how they live. However, all forms of life share certain characteristics that set them apart from nonliving things. These characteristics include the ability to reproduce, to grow, and to respond to changes in the environment.
Traditionally, biology has been divided into two major fields. Botany deals with plants, and zoology with animals. Botany and zoology are further divided into various branches and specialized areas of study. But most branches of biology for example, anatomy (the study of the structure of living things) and genetics (the study of heredity) apply to both plants and animals.
Biological research has greatly affected people's lives. For example, farm production has soared as biologists have helped develop better varieties of plants and new agricultural techniques. Discoveries in biology have enabled physicians to prevent, treat, or cure many diseases. Research on the relationships between living things and their environment has helped in the management of wildlife and other natural resources.

Nobel Prizes in Neuroscience
Part I
The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious honors that a scientist can be awarded. This article summarizes of the Nobel Prize-wining work by people who changed our view of the nervous system through their research and discoveries.

"in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system"
Camillo Golgi (Italy) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Santiago Ramon y Cajal (Spain) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Cajal and Golgi shared the Nobel Prize for their tremendous contribution to our understanding o the anatomical structure of the brain. Interestingly, they both had different theories about the nature of contacts between nerve cell. Despite this, each scientists produced a large body of work and refined techniques histological techniques impacted future generations of neuroanatomists. Some of this work is described in a previous feature article

"for his work on the dioptrics of the eye"
Allvar Gullstrand (Sweden) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
This price was award for the furtherance of our understanding of the optic principles of the eye and its function in vision.

"for his work on the physiology and pathology of the vestibular apparatus"
