    • A Brief History of the Human Genome Project - This chapter summarizes human genetics and its history with simple descriptions of modes of inheritance using the commonly-used terms from the genetic literature. It also describes current efforts to create genetic maps and to sequence the 3 billion bases in the human genome.

Spider Report a deadlink Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873) - Adam Sedgwick was born on March 22, 1785, the third of seven chidren of an Anglican vicar, in Dent, Yorkshire, England. His home life was happy; like so many geologists, young Adam spent time rambling through the countryside, looking at and collecting rocks and fossils. Despite his family's modest means, Sedgwick attended nearby Sedbergh School, and then entered Trinity College at Cambridge University, as a "sizar" a type of scholarship student...

Spider Report a deadlink Antony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) - Leeuwenhoek was an unlikely scientist. He came from a family of tradesmen, received no higher education, and knew no languages other than his native Dutch. This would have been enough to exclude him from the scientific community of his time. Yet with skill, diligence, and an open mind free of the scientific dogma, he succeeded in making some of the most important discoveries in biology. It was he who discovered bacteria, free-living and parasitic microscopic protists, and much more.

Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1962 for the discovery of the molecular structure of DNA, considered by many to be the most important discovery in the life sciences of all times. Dr. Francis Dr. Crick's research originally concentrated on X-ray diffraction studies of proteins. With three other scientists (professor Maurice Wilkins and the late Dr. Rosalind Franklin at King's College, London, together with Dr. James Watson), he was responsible in 1953 for the discovery of the molecular structure of deoxyribonuclecic acid (DNA)the biological Order of Merit from the Queen of England This is a Lifetime honor given to only 25 living English people at any one time. Dr. Crick is also a lecturer. His engagements have included memorial lectures all over the United States, where he has also been Visiting Lecturer at the Rockefeller Institute, New York , and Visiting Professor at Harvard. He is a Fellow of University College, London, an Honorary Fellow of Churchil College Cambridge, and Honorary Fellow of Caius College, Cambridge. About the scientists: Crick Francis Crick
Francis Harry Compton Crick was born on 8 June 1916 in Northampton, UK. Crick was educated at Northampton Grammar School and Mill Hill School, London. He studied physics at University College London obtaining a BSc in 1937 before starting research for a PhD but this was interrupted by the outbreak of war. In 1939 he worked as a scientist for the British Admiralty, and left in 1947 to study biology. Supported by a studentship from the Medical Research Council and with some financial help from his family, Crick went to Cambridge and worked at the Strangeways Research Laboratory . In 1949 he joined the Medical Research Council Unit headed by Max Perutz . He became a research student for the second time in 1950, as a member of Caius College, Cambridge
