James Dewey Watson – Biography
James Dewey Watson was born in Chicago, Ill., on April 6th, 1928, as the only son of James D. Watson, a businessman, and Jean Mitchell. His father's ancestors were originally of English descent and had lived in the midwest for several generations. His mother's father was a Scottish-born taylor married to a daughter of Irish immigrants who arrived in the United States about 1840. Young Watson's entire boyhood was spent in Chicago where he attended for eight years Horace Mann Grammar School and for two years South Shore High School. He then received a tuition scholarship to the University of Chicago , and in the summer of 1943 entered their experimental four-year college.
In 1947, he received a B.Sc. degree in Zoology. During these years his boyhood interest in bird-watching had matured into a serious desire to learn genetics. This became possible when he received a Fellowship for graduate study in Zoology at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he received his Ph.D. degree in Zoology in 1950. At Indiana, he was deeply influenced both by the geneticists

ESTRUCTURA MOLECULAR DE LOS ÁCIDOS NUCLEICOS Deseamos proponer una estructura para la sal del ácido desoxirribonucleico (ADN). Esta estructura presenta características nuevas que son de considerable interés biológico. Pauling y Corey ya han propuesto una estructura para el ácido nucleico. Con gentileza nos brindaron su manuscrito aun antes de publicarlo. Su modelo consta de tres cadenas entrelazadas, cuyos fosfatos se encuentran cerca del eje de fibra, mientras que, las bases dan al exterior. En nuestra opinión, esa estructura es insatisfactoria por dos razones: (1) Creemos que el material que produce los diagramas de rayos X es la sal, no el ácido libre. Sin lo átomos de hidrógeno acídicos no esta claro que fuerzas podrian mantener unida la estructura, de manera especial dado que los fosfatos cargados negativamente que hay cerca del eje se repelerían unos a otros; (2) Algunas de las distancias de Van der Waals parecen demasiado pequeñas. Fraser (en prensa) ha propuesto también otra estructura de tres cadenas. En su modelo, los fosfatos están por fuera y las bases en el interior , unidas por enlaces de hidrógeno. Es una estructura algo deficientemente definida, cual se describe, y por lo mismo no la comentaremos. Deseamos proponer una estructura radicalmente diferente para la sal del ácido desoxirribonucleico. En una estructura de dos cadenas helicoidales enrollada en torno al mismo eje. Hemos hecho los supuestos químicos usuales, a saber, que cada cadena consta de grupos diésteres de fosfasto unidos a residuos de b-D-Desoxirribofuranosa con enlaces de 3', 5'. Ambas cadenas (que no las bases) se encuentran relacionadas por una diada perpendicular al eje de fibra. Las dos cadenas siguen un giro hacia la derecha, pero por la diada las secuencias de loa átomos de ambas cadenas corren en dirección contraria. Cada cadena se parece algo al modelo N° 1 de Furberg
