Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech of H.H. the Dalai Lama - 1989 Your Majesty, Member of the Nobel Committee, Brothers and Sisters: No matter what part of the world we come from, we are all basically the same human beings. We all seek happiness and try to avoid suffering. We have basically the same human needs and concerns. All of us human beings want freedom and the right to determine our own destiny as individuals and as peoples. That is human nature. The great changes that are taking place in the world, from Eastern Europe to Africa, are a clear indication of this. In China the popular movement for democracy was crushed by brutal force in June this year. But I do not believe the demonstrations were in vain, because the spirit of freedom was rekindled among the Chinese people, and China cannot escape the impact of this spirit of freedom sweeping in many parts of the world. The brave students and their supporters showed the Chinese leadership and the world the human face of that great nation. Last week a number of Tibetans were once again sentenced to prison terms of up to nineteen years at a mass show trial, possibly intended to frighten the population before today's event. Their only "crime" was the expression of the widespread desire of Tibetans for the restoration of their beloved country's independence.

His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is both the head of state and the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people.
Dalai Lama is a Mongolian title meaning 'ocean of wisdom'. Tibetans believe that the Dalai Lama is an enlightened being, who has chosen rebirth as a way to be of benefit to all living beings.
    Early Life
The Dalai Lama was born to a peasant family on 6 July 1935 in the small village of Takster in the north-east province of Amdo. At the age of two, he was recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, and at the age of six, began his monastic education in Lhasa. In early March 1959, in front of 20,000 scholars, the Dalai Lama passed his final examination to qualify as a Geshe, or Doctor of Buddhist Philosophy, with honours.
    The Dalai Lama and China
In 1950, the Chinese army invaded Tibet. Although he was only 15 years old at the time, the Dalai Lama was called upon by the Tibetan Government to take full political responsibility as Head of State and Government of Tibet.
In 1954 the Dalai Lama was invited by the Chinese Government to travel to Beijing to meet with Mao Tse-tung and other senior Chinese officials. He accepted against the strong opposition of the Tibetan people, who feared for the safety of their leader.

    S.S. o Dalai Lama

As duas afirmações estavam corretas!

    http://www.uwec.edu/academic/curric/greidebe/Chinese.Japan/student.web.pages/200
The Fourteenth Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, commonly known as His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, is the gracious, spiritual leader and the head of state for the people of Tibet. He was born on July 6 th , 1935 to a peasant family in northeast Tibet in the village of Takster When Tenzin Gyatso was two years old, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama in agreement to Tibetan traditions. He currently resides in Dharamsala, India where he has lived in exile since 1959, after he escaped the Chinese invasion of Tibet. In 1989 Dalai Lama was highly recognized internationally when he received the outstanding Nobel Peace Price for his incredible efforts towards finding a nonviolent resolution that could eventually bring peace in Tibet if the Chinese authorities would show interest in having dialogue with the Tibetans. The Dalai Lama is a true optimistic person, who has a positive outlook and always believes that the true greatness for our society, lays in the hands of individuals, and that we can all make a difference in the world. I truly believe that individuals can make a difference in society. Since periods of great changes such as the present one come so rarely in human history, it is up to each of us to make the best use of our time to help crate a happier world.."

Nobel Peace Prize Citation of Dalai Lama (1989) [p.351]
1989 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE CITATION The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize to the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, the religious and political leader of the Tibetan people. The Committee wants to emphasize the fact that the Dalai Lama in his struggle for the liberation of Tibet consistently has opposed the use of violence. He has instead advocated peaceful solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect in order to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of his people. The Dalai Lama has developed his philosophy of peace from a great reverence for all things living and upon the concept of universal responsibility embracing all mankind as well as nature. In the opinion of the Committee the Dalai Lama has come forward with constructive and forward-looking proposals for the solution of international conflicts, human rights issues, and global environmental problems.
