After the untimely death of her best friend, Jess struggles to get a grip on life. Trying to cheer her up and also in search of a good story, her journalist father decides to take her to Northern India where he is to interview the Dalai Lama. But when they get to Dharamsala, they find the Dalai Lama has decided to go on a secret trip to Llasa and he asks Jess's father to cover the story of his secret return to his homeland. And so - incredibly - for a few very eventful weeks, their lives become closely entwined with his. Tracking the Dalai Lama is the incredible story of a teenager who has to overcome both the physical journey over the harsh terrain as well as do some soul searching during her trip across the roof of the world. The story also enlightens the plight of the Tibetan people whose country was invaded by the Chinese in 1950 and saw the Dalai Lama flee into exile in 1959. This novel retraces with great accuracy the plight of the Tibetan people and their government in exile which was so accurately described during the Dalai Lama's Nobel Prize speech: Tracking the Dalai Lama is a must read for High School students who want to understand more about the Dalai Lama and his government in exile. It is also a beautiful story about families, loyalty and reflection on one's journey through life.

Mairead Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate
"At a conference some time ago, I listened to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama's joy was obvious to those who had the pleasure of listening to him. He moved and inspired us all. He spoke of love and compassion, and each person's desire and right to happiness. He spoke of nonviolence as a means for the human family to solve its problems. He spoke lovingly of his homeland-Tibet, and the role China is playing in Tibet. He called for dialogue with the Chinese Government in solving the Tibetan/Chinese problem. His speech gave us all hope for the future. As His Holiness spoke, I thought of my own homeland-Northern Ireland. There was much he was saying which applied very definitely to my own area of the World. For 25 years the bitter conflict raged-taking the lives of thousands of people-until it was finally admitted that military and paramilitary actions-together with their attendant culture of abuse of human rights-were creating a never ending circle of violence and counter violence. Finally, it was admitted that the stalemate created by the violence had got to be broken, and this could only come about by all inclusive dialogue. We in Northern Ireland are still working towards solving our problems. The first steps in admitting that our deep ethnic/political problems cannot be solved by violence, and we are all part of the problem and therefore part of the solution, are important achievements in our evolving nonviolence culture. We have a long way to go but hopefully we are moving in the right direction.

Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso The Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama is something of a paradox to Western eyes. A deeply spiritual figure, he is also the political leader of 6 million Tibetan people. As such, he carries on a tradition that stretches unbroken to the 13th century.
But Chinese domination of his country has driven the Dalai Lama into exile. After fleeing to India in 1959 after the Chinese takeover of Tibet, he eventually settled in the town of Dharamsala, at the head of the Tibetan government in exile.
From there he has waged a peaceful campaign to free Tibet from Chinese rule, a struggle that won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. Now the plight of the Tibetan people is widely known, taken up by governments and celebrities around the world.
The Dalai Lama was born Lhamo Dhondup in 1935 to poor parents in a tiny farming village in eastern Tibet. He was renamed Tenzin Gyatso when he was recognized as the 14th dalai lama at age 2. Each dalai lama is believed by Tibetan Buddhists to be the reincarnation of the previous lama and the incarnation of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion.
"One of the main points is kindness. With kindness, with love and compassion, with this feeling that is the essence of brotherhood, sisterhood, one will have inner peace. This compassionate feeling is the basis of inner peace."

DALAI LAMA
Peace to Tibet, Peace in the world
Beginning his visit to France with a visit to the Caen Memorial, on Thursday 17 April 1997, the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual guide and head of government in exile, spoke before an enthusiastic audience of 1500 people. For nearly an hour and a half, the man in the saffron and claret robe, with the radiant smile and the child's laugh, delivered his message of peace, love and tolerance to the 500 young 18 to 25 year-olds who had come from all over Normandy to enter into this dialogue with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The lecture opened with a few words of welcome from Memorial director Jacques Belin, who emphasized the symbolic aspect of the presence of the 14 th Dalai Lama in this key setting for Peace. Recalling the thirst for spirituality of our western world as it loses its reference points, he ended with the need to seek interior peace, the vital key to building Peace in the world.

The first of the line was Dge-'dun-grub-pa (1391-1475), founder and abbot of Tashilhunpo monastery (central Tibet). In accordance with the belief in reincarnate lamas, which began to develop in the 14th century, his successors were conceived as his rebirths and came to be regarded as physical manifestations of the compassionate bodhisattva ("Buddha-to-be"), Avalokiteshvara. The second head of the Dge-lugs-pa order, Dge-'dun-rgya-mtsho (1475-1542), became the head abbot of the 'Bras-spungs (Drepung) monastery on the outskirts of Lhasa, which thenceforward was the principal seat of the Dalai Lama. His successor, Bsod-nams-rgya-mtsho (1543-88), while on a visit to the Mongol chief Altan Khan, received from that ruler the honorific title ta-le (Anglicized as "dalai"), the Mongolian equivalent of the Tibetan rgya-mtsho

Dalai Lama's Visit To Korea Hit Snag Amid Protest
Press Release Tibet Information Network, London News Release
Dalai Lama's Visit To Korea Hit Snag Amid Protest SEOUL, Oct 30, 2000 (Reuters) A group of religious activists held a rally in downtown Seoul on Sunday to press the government to allow Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to visit South Korea in November. The religious group which has pushed for the Dalai Lama's visit to Seoul said on Sunday the Korean government has formally declined to allow the visit. "Diplomatic authorities told us they could not issue visa to the Dalai Lama on Saturday, shattering the Korean people's expectations (about the visit)," the Dalai Lama Invitation Organizing Committee said in a statement on Sunday. Diplomatic sources in Seoul were not available for comment on Seoul's position on the issue. The alleged formal rejection came after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in September asked the organizing committee to postpone the invitation until 2001. "How come President (Kim Dae-jung) who won the Nobel Peace Prize himself would not allow another Nobel Peace laureate to come to South Korea?" the committee supporting the visit of the Dalai Lama to South Korea asked.

The Dalai Lama Sparks a Fever for Tibetan Buddhism
This article was written by Anna Wang and Marlene Chen, translated by Brent Heinrich, and published by Taiwan's Sinorama magazine in April 1997. On March 22, 1997, the Dalai Lama, Nobel-prize-winning spiritual and political leader of Tibet, began a five-day series of lectures and interviews of a religious nature in Taiwan. In addition, he met with then ROC President Lee Teng-hui. The Buddhist community put immense effort into his reception, and the Dalai Lama's particularly sensitive status sparked a debate in political circles over the issue of Taiwan's sovereignty. The nature of his meeting with President Lee even attracted international notice. Nevertheless, most of his admirers were simply happy to see the Dalai Lama come to Taiwan and only hoped to glimpse the dignified deportment of this crusader for human rights who has experienced a wealth of hardship.

Dalai Lamas personify the most senior religious authority recognised by Tibetan Buddhism. They are considered to be re-incarnations of Avalokitesvara - the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
Although the title "Dalai Lama" came into use in later times the person who is retrospectively recognised as having been the first, Gendun Drub, lived 1391-1474.
The actual title, meaning "teacher of wisdom as vast as the ocean", was first associated in 1578 with the third incumbent Sonam Gyatso (1543-1588).
It was in 1642 during the times of the fifth incumbent (1617-1682) that Dalai Lamas came to be recognised as being the spiritual and temporal leaders of Tibet.
The current (Fourteenth) Dalai Lama was born on the 6 th July 1935 in Taktser, a farming village, in north eastern Tibet and given the name Lhamo Dhondrub.
When an incumbent Dalai Lama dies his soul is believed to enter the body of a new born male infant. Extensive searches are made to establish which male child is to be recognised as the divinely ordained successor.
On being formally recognised as an incarnation of Avalokitesvara Lhamo Dhondrub, then two years old, was renamed Tenzin Gyatso - a name suggesting holiness, gentleness, compassion and wisdom. In October 1939 the youthful successor was brought to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and was formally installed as head of state, under a regency during his minority, in February of 1940.
