Henry Hallett Dale was born in London on June 9, 1875. He attended Leys School, Cambridge, and in 1894 he entered Trinity College with a scholarship. He graduated through the Natural Sciences Tripos, specializing in physiology and zoology. From 1898 to 1900 he was a Coutts-Trotter Student in Physiology at Trinity College, working then under J. N. Langley. In 1900 he gained a scholarship and entered St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, for the clinical part of the medical course. He qualified as B.Ch., Cambridge in 1903 and became M.D. in 1909. Meanwhile, he had been awarded the George Henry Lewes Studentship in Physiology and he used it to carry out research under Professor Starling at University College London . It was here that he met his lifelong friend, Otto Loewi . During 1903, he spent four months with Paul Ehrlich in Frankfurt before returning to University College as Sharpey Scholar. He held this post for only six months before he took an appointment as pharmacologist at the Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories in 1904. He became Director of these laboratories in 1906, working for some six years with the chemical cooperation of George Barger.
In 1914, Dale was appointed Director of the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology at the

Sir Henry Hallett Dale – Nobel Lecture
Nobel Lecture, December 12, 1936
Some recent extensions of the chemical transmission of the effects of nerve impulses
The transmission of the effects of nerve impulses, by the release of chemical agents, first became an experimental reality in 1921. In that year Otto Loewi published the first of the series You will see that, according to this relatively new evidence, a chemical mechanism of transmission is concerned, not only with the effects of autonomic nerves, but with the whole of the efferent activities of the peripheral nervous system, whether voluntary or involuntary in function. This extension of the principle of chemical transmission has come as a surprise to many; the relative ease, with which the evidence justifying it can be obtained, has been surprising to ourselves. But the basic conception, which encouraged us to undertake experiments in this direction, was no novelty to me; and for its origin I must ask you to look briefly at some experiments which I had already made and published in 1914 . My chemical collaborator at that time, Dr. Ewins

Dale, Sir Henry Hallett 1875-1968, English scientist. For his study of acetylcholine as agent in the chemical transmission of nerve impulses he shared with Otto Loewi the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He also investigated the pharmacology of ergot and histamine shock. He was director of the National Institute for Medical Research (1928-42), professor of chemistry and director of the Davy-Faraday Laboratory at the Royal Institution (1942-46), and president of the Royal Society (1940-45) and of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (1947). In 1932 he was knighted. His writings include Adventures in Physiology (1953) and Autumn Gleanings

    Sir Henry Hallett Dale
Henry Hallett Dale was an English physiologist born in London, England on June 9, 1875. His research career began at Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories in 1904 while he pursued a degree in medicine at the University of Cambridge. From 1928 to 1942, Dale was director of the National Institute for Medical Research. During World War II, he served as chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet, and, in 1932, was knighted Sir Henry Hallett Dale. Dale identified histamine in animal tissues in 1911, and after studying the physiological effects, concluded that it was responsible for certain allergic and anaphylactic reactions. The neuro-transmitter, acetylcholine, was isolated by Dale in 1914. In the following years, he discovered acetylcholine's presence in animal tissues and found that it was released from nerve endings of the parasympathetic nervous system. Dale's research established acetylcholine as a chemical transmitter of nerve impulses. Sir Henry Hallett Dale and Otto Loewi were jointly awarded the 1936 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries involving the chemical transmission of nerve impulses. In 1944, Dale was also awarded the Order of Merit in recognition for his advancement of science. Sir Henry Hallett Dale passed away on July 23, 1968, at the age of 93.

    Dale, Sir Henry Hallett
British physiologist who in 1936 shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Otto Loewi for proving that chemical substances are involved in the transmission of nerve impulses.
Dale was born in London and studied at Cambridge; St Bartholomew's Hospital, London; University College, London; and Frankfurt, Germany. He was director of the Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories 1906-14; worked at the Medical Research Council 1914-28, and was director of the National Institute for Medical Research 1928-42.
In 1910, investigating the chemical composition and effects of ergot (a fungus that infects cereals and other grasses), Dale identified the substance now known as histamine. In 1914 he isolated acetylcholine from biological material. With Loewi, he later showed it to be produced at the nerve endings of parasympathetic nerves.
