Tilz The History of Clinical Immunology T he history of CLINICAL IMMUNOLOGY at GRAZ UNIVERSITY is titling to the pioneer activities of Professor Tilz. The official inauguration of Clinical Immunology was an operation, when the first kidney transplantation on Johann Schauersberger was carried out on Good Friday April the 13 th The preparation of Antilymphocytic Globulin, Histocompatibili ty testing, introduction of Immunological assays for the determination of Immunosuppression where necessary and done by Professor Tilz after his studies with Nobel-Prize Laureats such as B.P. Medawar, N.K. Jerne and Jean Dausset. Operation was done by H. Cesnik, Nephrology by H. Poglitsch and the whole Immunology part by G. Tilz. He also developed Antilymphocytic Globulin and Antithymocytic Globulin in various species such as horses, pigs, rabbits and mice. It also served as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool for the following decades at GRAZ UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL and was succeeded later by monoclonal antibodies.

NIH Nobel Prize Winners 1968Dr. Marshall W. Nirenberg, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the key to deciphering the genetic code. Dr. Nirenberg and two other researchers, working independently, with whom he shared the prize, made major advances in understanding the chemical mechanisms by which genetic language or information is translated into various proteins that determine the nature and characteristics of all living things. Dr. Nirenberg was the first NIH Nobelist and also the first Federal employee to receive a Nobel Prize. 1970Dr. Julius Axelrod, National Institute of Mental Healthshared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with two scientists from England and Swedenfor independent research into the chemistry of nerve transmission. The three were cited for their “discoveries concerning the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanisms for their storage, release and inactivation.” Specifically, Dr. Axelrod found an enzyme that terminates the action of the nerve transmitter, noradrenaline. He also demonstrated that some antidepressant drugs act by preventing the reuptake of noradrenaline and thus prolong its action in the brain. 1972Dr. Christian B. Anfinsen

Aprofite per a agrair a aquest claustre l’oportunitat de pronunciar la laudatio , especialment per a mi per l’afecte i l’amistat de molts anys amb el professor Jean Dausset. El professor Jean Dausset, premi Nobel de Medicina o Fisiologia de l’any 1980; va nàixer a Tolosa de Llenguadoc, a França, el 1916. Va estudiar medicina a la Facultat de Medicina de París i després d’una temporada a l’Àfrica, ha passat la major part de la seua vida a París, on ha viscut i ha rebut tota classe d’honors, a més de, com ja he indicat, posseir el premi Nobel. Tardaríem molt a indicar, encara que fóra breument, el seu currículum, de manera que d’una forma abreujada ressaltaré que ha sigut director d’Investigació de la Unitat d’Immunogenètica de trasplantaments humans a l’Institut Nacional de la Salut i de la Investigació Mèdica; fundador i president de France-Transplant; fundador i president de France-Bone Marrow Grafts; fundador i president del Centre del Polimorfisme Humà; professor d’Immunohematologia a la Facultat de Medicina de la Universitat de París i professor de Medicina Experimental al Col·legi de França. Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina Premio Nobel : premios concedidos cada año a personas, entidades u organismos por sus aportaciones extraordinarias realizadas durante el año anterior en los campos de la Física, Química, Fisiología y Medicina, Literatura, Paz y Economía. Otorgados por primera vez el 10 de diciembre de 1901, los premios están financiados por los intereses devengados de un fondo en fideicomiso contemplado en el testamento del químico, inventor y filántropo sueco Alfred Bernhard Nobel. Además de una retribución en metálico, el ganador del Premio Nobel recibe también una medalla de oro y un diploma con su nombre y el campo en que ha logrado tal distinción. Los jueces pueden dividir cada premio entre dos o tres personas, aunque no está permitido repartirlo entre más de tres. Si se considerara que más de tres personas merecen el premio, se concedería de forma conjunta. El fondo está controlado por un comité de la Fundación Nobel, compuesto por seis miembros en cada mandato de dos años: cinco elegidos por los administradores de los organismos contemplados en el testamento, y el sexto nombrado por el Gobierno sueco. Le Monde du 26 mai 2000 : Une pétition lancée par le professeur Mattei s'oppose aux brevets sur les gènes humains Parmi les signataires, deux Prix Nobel de médecine, Me Varaut, Jacques Testart et Boris Cyrulnik Jean-François Mattei, député européen et député (DL), et Wolfgang Wodarg, député (SPD) allemand, ont lancé une pétition s'opposant à l'attribution de brevets sur le génome humain. Ce texte a recueilli les signatures des Prix Nobel de médecine Jean Dausset et François Jacob, de l'avocat Jean-Marc Varaut, de l'ancien ministre de la justice Jean Foyer, du biologiste Jacques Testart et l'ethnologue Boris Cyrulnik. LANCÉE il y a un mois par le professeur Jean-François Mattei, spécialiste de génétique et député (DL) des Bouches-du-Rhône, ainsi que par le docteur Wolfgang Wodarg, député allemand (SPD), la pétition visant à s'opposer à une directive européenne permettant une appropriation directe des séquences du patrimoine héréditaire (génome) de l'espèce humaine réunit aujourd'hui de multiples signatures. Au bas de ce texte, rédigé par ces deux médecins qui sont aussi délégués auprès de l'assemblée parlementaire du Conseil de l'Europe, figurent les signatures de personnalités aussi différentes que les professeurs Jean Dausset et François Jacob, tous deux Prix Nobel de médecine, l'avocat Jean-Marc Varaut, l'ancien ministre de la justice Jean Foyer, le président de la Croix-Rouge, Marc Gentilini, le biologiste Jacques Testart, l'ethnologue Boris Cyrulnik, le metteur en scène Marcel Maréchal ou les professeurs François Gros et Françoise Héritier-Augé.
