From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent.

Symposium will honor Felix Milgrom
Clinicians, researchers and scientists from around the world, including a Nobel Prize winner, are expected to attend the fifth Basic Sciences Symposium of the Transplantation Society, to be held Sept. 6-11 at the Chautauqua Institution. The event is co-sponsored by the Ernest Witebsky Center for Immunology at UB. State-of-the-art research on immunological factors important in human organ transplantation will be presented during the program, which will feature more than 200 oral and poster presentations involving transplant research. The symposium will be dedicated in honor of Felix Milgrom, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the UB Department of Microbiology, at a tribute beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, in the Athenaeum Hotel. Milgrom is credited with pioneering research in basic and medical immunology in the fields of transplantation and autoimmunity. Speakers at the tribute will include 1980 Nobel Prize winner Jean Dausset; Jean Borel of Switzerland; Noel Rose, former director of the Witebsky Center who is now at The Johns Hopkins University, and Robert S. Schwartz of Tufts University. Anyone interested in attending the tribute or registering for the conference should contact Roger Cunningham, director of the Witebsky Center, at 829-2901.

WORLD SCIENTISTS' CALL FOR ACTION
AT THE KYOTO CLIMATE SUMMIT
Five years ago, in the World Scientists' Warning to Humanity , 1600 of the world's senior scientists sounded an unprecedented warning: Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms. Addressed to political, industrial, religious, and scientific leaders, the Warning demonstrated that the scientific community had reached a consensus that grave threats imperil the future of humanity and the global environment. However, over four years have passed, and progress has been woefully inadequate. Some of the most serious problems have worsened. Invaluable time has been squandered because so few leaders have risen to the challenge. The December 1997 Climate Summit in Kyoto, Japan, presents a unique opportunity. The world's political leaders can demonstrate a new commitment to the protection of the environment. The goal is to strengthen the 1992 Framework Convention on Climate Change by agreeing to effective controls on human practices affecting climate. This they can and must do, primarily by augmenting the Convention's voluntary measures with legally binding commitments to reduce industrial nations' emissions of heat-trapping gases significantly below 1990 levels in accordance with a near-term timetable.

  • L'historique.

Dausset, Jean His mother originated from Lorraine, his father from the Pyrénées, two French provinces very distant from one another and with vast cultural differences. His parents met in Paris. During the First World War, his father, a doctor and captain in the army, sent Jean Dausset's mother and the first three children to Toulouse. It was there that Jean Dausset was born, on 19th October 1916, and this region has held a strong attachment for him ever since.
After the war, his father worked as a physiotherapist and radiologist, dividing his time between Paris and the spa towns. Jean Dausset spent his early childhood in Biarritz, until the age of secondary school. Then, when he was 11 years old, his family came to settle permanently in Paris. He pursued his secondary studies at the Lycée Michelet and obtained his baccalaureate in mathematics. His choice of career was almost dictated by that of his father, Henri Dausset, who pioneered Rheumatology in France. His medical studies progressed without incident until the advent of the Second World War, when they were interrupted. He was mobilized in 1939 and returned from the French Campaign in 1940 to a Paris occupied by the Germany Army. He began to devote his time ardently to the preparation of a competitive examination for the title of Intern of the Paris Hospitals. Upon receiving this title, he immediately left to join the fighting forces in North Africa. During the Tunisian Campaign, he performed blood transfusions in the army. This was his first introduction to immunohaematology.
