The former U.S. Comptroller of the Currency recommends a woman for a position in the Treasury Department.
TLS: "Charles G. Dawes" Chicago, 1903 December 2. As President of the Central Trust Company of Illinois (1902-1921), Dawes writes to Secretary of the Treasury L.M. Shaw , Washington, D.C. In full: "I understand Mrs. Alice Rossiter Willard, formerly clerk in the Census Bureau, is desirous of obtaining appointment in the Treasury Department. Mrs. Willard I understand has an excellent record in the Census Bureau, and I shall be glad if you can in any way assist her. I do not know what positions are exempt from Civil Service, or whether she could be accorded a special examination for entrance into the Treasury Department, but I hope you can assist her as I believe her a most deserving woman." LESLIE M. SHAW was Theodore Roosevelt's Secretary of the Treasury from February 1, 1902 until March 3, 1907. Dawes had served as President McKinley's Comptroller of the Currency (1898-1901) and was one of those at his bedside when he died on September 14, 1901 after being shot in Buffalo. In World War I, Dawes was Chief of Supply Procurement on General Pershing's staff and, in 1919, received the Distinguished Service Medal of the United States for "exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services" and medals from England, France, Italy and Belgium. In 1923, he was President of the German reparations commission formulating the

“We must not fear the consequences of truth, only the failure to tell it completely." Charles Dawes Charles Dawes, Calvin Coolidge’s Vice President, developed a life-long interest in banking and finance into a prominent political career. From his beginnings as a lawyer in Nebraska and a successful career in real estate and investment to his political and governmental career, Dawes left his mark on the nation. Dawes’s family also had prominent businessmen among its lineage. His father owned and managed a successful lumber company in Marietta, Ohio. An uncle was a prosperous banker. The experiences and influences of his family members shaped his life. In his autobiography Calvin Coolidge noted the importance of one’s ancestors by recalling the comments of a New England sage "reported to have said that the education of a child should begin several generations before it is born." Given the contributions of the Dawes family heritage to the American experience, these words definitely applied to Dawes’s life.
