BIOGRAPHY - D
A B C D ... Z DAHLERUS, BIRGER Swiss businessman and friend of Hermann Goering who flew to England (August 1939), in Goering's private plane to personally deliver copies of Hitler's proposals for a peaceful settlement of the Danzig problem to Lord Halifax. Dahlerus is also said to have passed along the date of Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union, at Goering's request, in May/June 1942. DALUEGE, KURT (1897-1946) Commander-in-Chief of the Police of the German Reich and later Deputy Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. Daluege joined the NSDAP in 1922 and in March 1926 founded and led the first SA group in Berlin and North Germany, a position he held until 1928, when he transferred to the SS. For the next five years he was Commander of SS units in East Germany, organizing special shock battalions for surprise attacks on opponents. After Hitler came to power in 1933, he was given the special assignment of purging the police apparatus of Hitler's opponents, and was largely responsible for turning the police into an instrument of the Nazi regime. Promoted to SS General in 1934, he subsequently became the most powerful policeman in the SS, second in rank only to Himmler. After Heydrich's death, he became Deputy Protector of Bohemia and Moravia in 1942, and was said to have been responsible for the destruction of the village of Lidice. He was executed by the Czechs in October 1946. DARRE, RICHARD WALTHER

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DAWES FAMILY AND THE DAWES ARBORETUM
The Dawes Arboretum officially began on June 1, 1929 when Beman Gates Dawes (1870-1953) and his wife, Bertie Burr Dawes (1872-1958) created a private foundation and set aside land for the benefit of the public. According to the Deed of Trust, the purpose of The Arboretum is:
"to give pleasure to the public and education to the youth; and to increase the general knowledge and love of trees and shrubs, and bring about an increase and improvement in their growth and culture."
The Dawes family lived on this property beginning about 1917.

The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 ‹ The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.
