I was born on October 2nd 1917, in Thames-Ditton, near London. My parents, of Belgian-German extraction, were Belgian nationals who had taken refuge in England during the war. They returned to Belgium in 1920, and I grew up in the cosmopolitan harbour city of Antwerp, at a time when education in the Flemish part of the country was still half French and half Flemish. Due to these various circumstances, when I entered the Catholic University of Louvain in 1934, I had already travelled in a number of European countries and spoke four languages fairly fluently. This turned out to be a valuable asset in my subsequent career as a scientist.
That I would embrace such a career was, however, very far from my mind. My education, according to the tradition of the jesuit school which I attended, had been centered on the "ancient humanities", and I was strongly attracted to the more literary branches. I nevertheless decided to study medicine, largely because of the appeal of medical practice as an occupation. Medical studies left a fair amount of free time in those days, and there was a tradition at the university that the better students joined a research laboratory. So it was that I entered the physiology laboratory of Professor J. P. Bouckaert, whose rigorous analytical mind exerted a strong influence on my intellectual development. I was attached to a group investigating the effect of insulin on glucose uptake. By the time when I graduated as an MD in 1941, I had abandoned all thought of a medical career, and had only one ambition: to elucidate the mechanism of action of insulin.

In the meantime, war had broken out. After a brief interval in the army and a temporary stay in a prisoners' camp, from which I promptly escaped thanks to the general confusion which followed the disastrous defeat of the allies, I had returned to Louvain to complete my studies. I had become convinced that the problem of insulin action needed to be approached by means of biochemical methods. Since research activities were almost paralysed due to lack of essential supplies, I embarked an another four-year curriculum, to gain the degree of "Licencié en Sciences Chimiques". I combined these studies with a clinical internship in the Cancer Institute, with as much experimental work as war circumstances allowed, and with extensive reading of the earlier literature on insulin.

Belgian biochemist, born in London, who in recent years has argued that that the evolution of life and mind on the Earth was inevitable. This formed the subject of his 1995 book Vital Dust . de Duve shared the 1974 Nobel Prize for Medicine for his contributions to understanding the structural and functional organization of cells, including his discovery of lysosomes. In 1962 he was appointed a professor at the Rockefeller Institute in New York and has divided his time since between here and the University of Louvain in Brussels, from which he received an M.D. (1941) and the degree of "Agrégé de l'Enseignement Supérieur" (1945) for a thesis on the mechanism of insulin. He is now emeritus professor at both institutions and plans, in his own words, "to devote my remaining years to further probing what, if anything, our growing understanding of life and mind can tell us about the structure and meaning of the universe."

CHRISTIAN DE DUVE

A master class in the nature of life, taught by one of the world's most eminent scientists, Nobel laureate Christian de Duve

In just a half century, humanity has made an astounding leap in its understanding of life. Now, one of the giants of biological science, Christian de Duve, discusses what we've learned in this half century, ranging from the tiniest cells to the future of our species and of life itself. In Life Evolving , one of our most eminent scientists sums up what he has learned about the nature of life and our place in the universe. An extraordinarily wise and humane volume, it will fascinate readers curious about the world around them and about the impact of science on philosophy and religion. "A well-written, engaging scientific tour de force.... de Duve exhibits an extraordinary skill in conveying his deep knowledge of biology.... Both a first-rate scholar and an accomplished popularizer of science...de Duve moves with equal familiarity and eloquence from scientific papers to French poets.... Life Evolving forces the reader to avoid intellectual complacency and to articulate one's own arguments to effectively address his position. These are, in themselves, major reasons to appreciate the book."

Christian deDuve Lectures on the Origins and Evolution of Life at UCSD (4/5/01)
by Casey Luskin
On Thursday, April 5th, Nobel laureate Christian de Duve gave a free public lecture at UC San Diego, sponsored by the NASA Specialized Center of Research and Training (NSCORT / Exobiology) at the Scripps Research Institute and Scripps Institution for Oceanography. De Duve, who won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1974 for discoveries concerning the structural and functional organization of the cell, titled his lecture, "Reflections on the origins and evolution of life." This was the 3rd talk sponsored by NSCORT2 years ago Freeman Dyson spoke on the origins of life.
De Duve's lecture was very interesting, as he started off by saying that most of his life he's been a research biochemist, but only in the last few years has he become an "armchair" theorist with regards to the origins of life.
