In 1974 a change in the statutes of the Nobel Foundation gave researchers access to the Nobel archives relating to prizes awarded at least fifty years before. Historians of science and medicine have used this opportunity to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding the awarding of the physics and chemistry prizes by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science and the medicine or physiology prize by the Karolinska Institute. The articles in this volume present the results of recent research by an international group of historians.
How did it happen that all but one of the physicists and chemists who gathered in Stockholm in 1920 to receive the prizes they had won during and immediately after the First World War were Germans? Why did George de Hevesy have to wait 21 years between 1924, when he was first nominated for the Nobel Prize in chemistry and 1944, when he received the 1943 prize? What were the circumstances in which Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein were rewarded in 1922 with the physics prizes of 1921 and 1922, and how did the two men react to this decision? Why did Freud never receive the Nobel Prize? Why did Katsusaburo Yamagiwa not share the first Nobel prize for cancer research, which was awarded to Johannes Fibiger in 1927?
