Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac was born on 8th August, 1902, at Bristol, England, his father being Swiss and his mother English. He was educated at the Merchant Venturer's Secondary School, Bristol, then went on to Bristol University . Here, he studied electrical engineering, obtaining the B.Sc. (Engineering) degree in 1921. He then studied mathematics for two years at Bristol University, later going on to St.John's College, Cambridge , as a research student in mathematics. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1926. The following year he became a Fellow of St.John's College and, in 1932, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge.
Dirac's work has been concerned with the mathematical and theoretical aspects of quantum mechanics. He began work on the new quantum mechanics as soon as it was introduced by Heisenberg in 1928 - independently producing a mathematical equivalent which consisted essentially of a noncommutative algebra for calculating atomic properties - and wrote a series of papers on the subject, published mainly in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, leading up to his relativistic

Dirac, Paul Adrien Maurice (1902-1984)

English physicist whose calculations predicted that particles should exist with negative energies. This led him to suggest that the electron had an " antiparticle " This antielectron was discovered subsequently by Carl Anderson in 1932, and came to be called the positron Dirac also developed a tensor version of the known as the Dirac equation which is relativistically correct. The Bristol-born physicist Paul Dirac was one of the most influential scientists of the twentieth century , writes Peter Rodgers, editor of Physics World . Dirac made many crucial contributions to quantum mechanics, the theory which describes the world on very small scales, and shared the 1933 Nobel Prize for Physics "for the discovery of new and productive forms of atomic theory". Dirac's career Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac was born at 15 Monk Road in Bishopston, Bristol, UK, on 8 August 1902. His father was from Switzerland and taught French at the Merchant Venturers' Technical College in Bristol. His mother was from Cornwall. The young Dirac was educated at the Bishop Road Elementary School and the secondary school of the Merchant Venturers', which later became Cotham Grammar School. In 1918 he entered Bristol University, where he graduated with first-class honours in electrical engineering in 1921. Fascinated by Einstein's theories of relativity, but unable to take up a scholarship at Cambridge University for financial reasons, he stayed at Bristol and graduated in mathematics, again with first-class honours, in 1923. Dirac then moved to St John's College, Cambridge, to do research in theoretical physics under the supervision of Ralph (RH) Fowler of the Cavendish Laboratory. Within a few years Dirac had completed in his Nobel Prize work. In 1932 he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, the post once held by Sir Isaac Newton and today by Stephen Hawking.

Paul Dirac
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac August 8 October 20 ) was a physicist and a founder of the field of quantum physics He was born in Bristol Gloucestershire England In 1926 he developed a version of quantum mechanics, which included “Matrix Mechanics” and “Wave Mechanics” as special cases. In 1928, building on Pauli's work on nonrelativistic spin systems, he derived the Dirac equation , a relativistic equation describing the electron. This allowed Dirac to predict the existence of the positron , the electron's anti-particle; the positron was subsequently observed by Anderson in 1932. Dirac explained the origin of quantum spin as a relativistic phenomenon.

Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac Click here for full size picture (b. Aug. 8, 1902, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Eng.d. Oct. 20, 1984, Tallahassee, Fla., U.S.), English theoretical physicist known for his work in quantum mechanics and for his theory of the spinning electron. In 1933 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with the Austrian physicist Dirac's mathematical ability showed itself at an early age. At the school he attended in Bristol he was given rather advanced books on mathematics to study independently. His father, a Swiss by birth who was the French master at the same school, encouraged his son to develop his mathematical ability. He wished him also to become fluent in French, to the extent that, according to the son's report, the elder Dirac refused to speak to him unless he was addressed in the French language. This may have fostered Dirac's pronounced tendency to speak seldom and choose his words with utmost care. He avoided company, preferring to work alone. His chief pastime was solitary walks. Toward the practical end of earning a living, Dirac studied engineering at the University of Bristol. The use of approximations that he learned in this study had a strong influence on his later work; it strengthened his confidence in the intuitive approach to problem solving. He came to believe that a theory expressing fundamental laws of nature could be constructed solely on the basis of approximations, guided by intuition rather than exact knowledge of the actualities. He declared that the actual phenomena were too complex ever to be pinned down in a precise way; a physicist must be satisfied to work only with approximate knowledge of reality.

Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac Dirac was a British physician theoretician, one of the fellow quantum mechanic and QED discoverer was born in 1902. Since 1932 has he been the Cambridge University professor, since 1953 he has worked in Oxford. Since 1953 he has been member of Royal Society. In 1927 he first used quantum theory to electromagnetic field . He also made a quantum radiation theory and relativity theory of electron move. He made a Dirac equation, which solving let scientists make a theory of plus electrons (anti-electrons). He gave a hypothesis of antimatter (1933). For a discovering of sub-atomic laws Dirac received a Nobel Prize in 1933. He died in 1984.
