Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac
Reminiscences about a Great Physicist
Edited by Behram N. Kursunoglu, Eugene Paul Wigner
Hardback In stock Paul Dirac, who died in 1984, was without question one of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century. His revolutionary contribution to modern quantum theory is remembered for its insight and creativity. He is especially famous for his prediction of the magnetic moment and spin of the electron and for the existence of antiparticles. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1933 at the age of 31. In this memorial volume, 24 of Dirac’s friends, colleagues and contemporaries remember him with affection. There are chapters describing Dirac’s personality, and many anecdotes about the man with a reputation for silence. Other chapters describe Dirac’s science and its impact on modern physics.

Origin
P. A. M. Dirac "Of course the most famous geniuses of theoretical physics in the twentieth century were Niels Bohr, Albert Einstein, and P. A. M. Dirac. They went far beyond conceiving models or explaining some experimental facts. Einstein revolutionized our concepts of space, time and gravity. Bohr created the most important concepts necessary for dealing with atomic reality. Dirac succeeded in unifying relativity theory with quantum mechanics, leading both to the concept of antimatter and to quantum field theory, a consistent way of dealing with the interaction of matter with electromagnetic and other fields." Victor Weisskopf "Physical Laws should have mathematical beauty." This statement was Dirac's response to the question of his philosophy of physics, posed to him in Moscow in 1955. He wrote it on a blackboard that is still preserved today. [1] Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac (1902-1984), known as P. A. M. Dirac, was the fifteenth Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. He shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1933 with Erwin Schrodinger. [2] He is considered to be the founder of quantum mechanics, providing the transition from quantum theory. The Cambridge Philosophical Society awarded him the Hopkins Medal in 1930. He was awarded the Royal Medal by the Royal Society of London in 1939 and the James Scott Prize from the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 1952 the Max Plank Medal came from the Association of German Physical Societies, as well as the Copley Medal from the Royal Society. The Akademie der Wissenschaften in the German Democratic Republic presented him with the Helmholtz Medal in 1964. In 1969 he received the Oppenheimer Prize from the University of Miami. Lastly in 1973, he received the Order of Merit. [3]

He was arguably Britain's greatest physicist after Newton, and followed in Newton's footsteps in becoming Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University in 1932. His greatest contribution to physics came during the winter of 1927-8 when he combined relativity with quantum mechanics, and produced what is known as "the Dirac equation ". This gave the correct relativistic description of the electron, and showed that it has spin (of half a unit). It also predicted the existence of antimatter , particularly in the form of "antielectrons" ( positrons ), which are like electrons but with opposite electric charge. In 1933 Dirac and Werner Schroedinger shared the Nobel prize for physics. Dirac retired from Cambridge in 1969 and moved to Florida, and in 1971 became Professor at the

    Paul Dirac
The English physicist Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac, b. Aug. 8, 1902, d. Oct. 22, 1984, made significant contributions to the development of quantum mechanics. In September 1925 he read an account of a lecture on quantum mechanics by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg, and quickly devised a number of new mathematical formulations of quantum mechanics that have since proved to be of great importance. In his first publication, in November 1925, Dirac elaborated a method for deriving the equation of motion from quantum mechanics, and a few months later he clearly defined a number of concepts that were to play a major role in the field. Dirac was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge from 1932 to 1969 and professor of physics at Florida State University, from 1971 until his death. In 1933 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics with Erwin Schrodinger.
