On the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates warn that our security hangs on environmental and social reform
The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. Also See:
Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium

It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in co-operative international action, legitimized by democracy. It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.

Harnessing science to solve global poverty and hunger The Nobel Laureate for Medicine, Dr Peter C Doherty, recently spoke at the Institute of Land and Food Resources as part of this year's Dean's Lecture series. Dr Doherty's lecture topic, Harnessing Science to Solve Global Poverty and Hunger, was first delivered to the Consultative Group in Agricultural Research at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC, as the 1998 Sir John Crawford Memorial Lecture. It was so inspirational, passionate, witty and insightful that the assembled audience of international policymakers gave him a standing ovation. An Australian immunologist, Dr Doherty currently serves as chairman of the Immunology Department at St Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. His long and distinguished career includes appointments at leading medical research institutions in Australia and in the United States. From 1986 to 1992, Dr Doherty served as a member of the CGIAR International Laboratory for Research in Animal Diseases in Nairobi, Kenya. Dr Doherty, together with his colleague Dr Rolf Zinkernagel, received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1996 for ground-breaking research to discover precisely how the human immune system recognises virus-infected cells and targets them for destruction. These discoveries have led to a new understanding of genetic susceptibility to disease, and new approaches for vaccines.

OSLO, Norway (OTVNewswire) At the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium here yesterday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates have issued a brief but dire warning of the "profound dangers" facing the world. Their statement predicts that our security depends on immediate environmental and social reform. The following is the text of their statement: THE STATEMENT
Alfred Nobel was a the Swedish-born inventor and international industrialist. The festival day of the Nobel Foundation takes place at the Stockholm Concert Hall (Stockholms Konserthus) in Sweden. His Majesty the King of Sweden, hands each Nobel Laureate a diploma, a medal and a document confirming the Prize amount. The Monetary Prize
In 1997 the amount awarded totalled SEK 7.5 million (about 1 million in US dollars) per full Prize. The amount varies because it comes from the interest earned from the fund created from the estate of Alfred Nobel. The Banquet
After the Ceremony, Nobel Laureates and their families are honoured at the Nobel Banquet at the Stockholm City Hall (Stockholms Stadshus). Approximately 1,300 people attend the Banquet. Their Majesties the King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family of Sweden are guests of honour at both the Ceremony and the Nobel Banquet. The Nobel Prize is considered the most prestigious prize in the world and receives worldwide coverage by the print media, radio and television.
