A History of the Red Cross
The idea of an organisation like the Red Cross, was born five years before the founding of the Red Cross, in the mind of a young Swiss banker, Jean Henri Dunant. In June 1859, he happened to be travelling in Northern Italy where the French, Italian and Austrian armies were fighting in the battle which later became known as the Battle of Solferino. This battle was fought on 24th June 1859, and Dunant witnessed this terrible war which rages on for 15 hours. At that time, Dunant happened to be travelling near Solferino in the nearby town of Castiglione. The casualities on both sides were enormous. About forty thousand men were dead or dying on the battlefield. The next day, the French tended to their wounded from early in the morning till late at night. But it was obvious that their medical service was not enough to cope with the large number of wounded. Dunant, seeing this, organised a group of women and girls from the town and also obtained the services of some travellers who happened to be travelling by. With their help, he tended to the wounded soldiers. However, they were Italians and the wounded were foreigners whom they feared. But Dunant kept repeating "

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1833. The son of an engineer, he moved in his childhood to Russia, where his father was working on an underwater mine. Alfred studied Chemistry in Paris and worked for a time in the USA before returning to Sweden in 1859.
In 1866 Nobel produced what he believed was a safe and manageable form of nitroglycerin called dynamite. He established his own factory to produce it but in 1864 an explosion at the plant killed Nobel's younger brother and four other workers. Deeply shocked by this event, he now worked on a safer explosive and in 1875 came up with gelignite.
Other inventions followed including ballistite, a form of

International Red Cross founder was first recipient of Nobel peace prize By Rev. Ed Hird, North Vancouver, B.C. Posted: October 12, 2001, 5:20 p.m. Great organizations invariably are birthed from great people. The Red Cross was birthed from the vision and drive of Jean Henri Dunant, who received the world’s first Nobel Peace Prize. Dunant was a Swiss businessman who ‘happened’ to be on hand to see the carnage and horror of the battle of Solferino, Italy, in 1858. Forty thousand wounded lay in their death throes under a blazing sun, in suffocating heat,
helpless and unattended. Amid the anguished cries of the wounded, in an atmosphere of panic and confusion, he gathered together a team of volunteers to relieve the ‘inexpressible sufferings’ of war. Four days
after the battle, Dunant discovered five hundred wounded who had been overlooked. Dunant commented: "I succeeded in getting together a certain number of women who helped me as best as they could to aid

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.
