Dunant, Jean Henri Philanthrope suisse (Genève, 1828 — Heiden, canton d'Appenzel, 1910).

Special Series Digital Lifestyles: feature by Sony EarthPulse National Geographic Out There ... Mount Everest Expedition "During his presidency (1977-1981), Carter's mediation was a vital contribution to the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, in itself a great enough achievement to qualify for the Nobel Peace Prize. At a time when the Cold War between East and West was still predominant, he placed renewed emphasis on the place of human rights in international politics. "Through his Carter Center, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2002, Carter has since his presidency undertaken very extensive and persevering conflict resolution on several continents. He has shown outstanding commitment to human rights, and has served as an observer at countless elections all over the world. He has worked hard on many fronts to fight tropical diseases and to bring about growth and progress in developing countries. Carter has thus been active in several of the problem areas that have figured prominently in the over one hundred years of Peace Prize history.

Dunant, Jean Henri
Swiss Philanthropist and Pacifist Scion of a bourgeois Geneva family, Jean Henri Dunant was horrified by the carnage of nearly forty thousand casualties he witnessed on the battlefield at Solferino, Italy, in 1859. He organized emergency care for wounded French and Austrian troops, to whom he became known as "the man in white." In a memoir published in 1862, he proposed the organization of relief societies in time of peace to care for the wounded in wartime, which led in 1864 to the foundation of the Red Cross and the drafting of the first international code of rules for war, the Geneva Convention. Neglecting his affairs, this tireless pacifist went bankrupt in 1867 campaigning against slavery, against "new and frightful weapons of destruction," and in favor of disarmament, international arbitration, humane treatment for prisoners of war, and the purchase of land in Palestine for the resettlement of Jews—well before the rise of the Zionist movement. Dunant shared the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 with Frédéric Passy, another Swiss. The International Red Cross, staffed by Swiss and functioning as a trusted go-between during armed conflicts, nevertheless engenders a certain amount of cynicism in Switzerland, where, in an allusion to one of the nation's principal arms exporters, it is sometimes wryly referred to as "the Oerlikon-Bürhle after-sales service."

AT OPENING OF NOBEL PEACE PRIZE CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION, SECRETARY-GENERAL REFLECTS
Following is the text of remarks by Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the opening of the Nobel Peace Prize 1901-2001 Centennial Exhibition, New York 4 March:
Let me express my warmest thanks to the Government of Norway and the sponsors for bringing this wonderful exhibition to New York.
For the United Nations and me, being centenary Peace Prize laureates was a singularly moving experience.
This exhibition does a fine job of explaining and illustrating the debt we owe to our predecessors both in and outside the United Nations who worked so hard and took such risks, over the past century, to save humanity from the scourge of war.
It tells us about Jean Henri Dunant, the Founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and indeed one of the founding fathers of humanitarian work as we still know it.
It tells us about Albert John Luthuli, the South African anti-apartheid leader who was the first African to win the Peace Prize.
It tells us about
In fact , it is striking that, in their different ways, all the Nobel laureates represented here supported the work or the ideals of the United Nations.

The Nobel Prize
In October, the Norwegian Nobel Institute announced the 2001 Nobel Prize winners for Literature, Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, and Peace. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Oslo, Sweden on Monday, December 10. This year's ceremony marks the centennial year of the Nobel Prizes, awarded to those who, in the words of founder Alfred Nobel, "have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind." The prize consists of a medal, a personal diploma, and a prize amount. In this week's online lesson you will learn about the men who were awarded Nobel Prizes for 2001, about the men and women who have been awarded prizes in the past, and about founder Alfred Nobel.
Nobel e-Museum
Begin this week's lesson by paying a visit to the Nobel e-Museum , the official web site of the Nobel Foundation which administers and manages the assets for the awarding of the Nobel Prizes. When the page opens you will see a list of the 2001 Laureates (winners) in each of the six categories. We'll get to them in a minute. First explore the links for each of the prize categories along the top navigation bar.
