Ehrlich, Paul German bacteriologist and immunologist who produced the first cure for syphilis. He developed the arsenic compounds, in particular Salvarsan, that were used in the treatment of syphilis before the discovery of antibiotics. He shared the 1908 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Ilya Mechnikov for his work on immunity.
Ehrlich founded chemotherapy - the use of a chemical substance to destroy disease organisms in the body. He was also one of the earliest workers on immunology, and through his studies on blood samples the discipline of haematology was recognized.
Ehrlich was born in Strehlin, Silesia (now Strzelin, Poland). He studied at Breslau, Strasbourg, and Leipzig. In 1884 he became a professor in Berlin, but spent 1886-88 in Egypt, curing himself of tuberculosis contracted in the course of research. He set up a small private laboratory in Berlin 1889, in addition to his academic posts.
Ehrlich teamed up with bacteriologists Emil von Behring and Shibasabur Kitasato to try to find a cure for diphtheria.

Storrs, Conn. Renowned ecologist Paul R. Ehrlich will share his controversial views on the relationship between overpopulation and environmental problems as part of Nature and the Environment , the Edwin Way Teale Lecture Series, next Tuesday at the University of Connecticut. Ehrlich will speak on Betrayal of Science and Reason Betrayal of Science and Reason: How Anti-Environmental Rhetoric Threatens Our Future (Island Press, 1996), chronicling the anti-environment movement. Bing Professor of Population Studies and professor of biological sciences at Stanford University, Ehrlich has been a pioneer in making the public aware of the problems of overpopulation and in making the issues of population, resources, and the environment matters of public policy. He has written hundreds of scientific papers and more than 30 books, including The Population Explosion

to 10 Catalytic antibodies also accelerate Diels-Alder reactions and Claisen re-arrangements. In both ring closure reactions the conformation of the transition state was known so that antibodies against an analogue of this transition state could be generated. The work of Schultz and Lerner shows that catalysis through antibodies only functions provided a stabilized transition state can be stabilized. The decisive key for influencing this process was found. Especially for organic chemistry, but also for molecular-biological research as well as for the medical and biotechnical fields, catalytic antibodies are of enormous significance since they play an important role in exactly controlling the direction and reactivity of chemical reactions and their efficiency. "Catalytic antibodies belong to the most important developments in immuno-chemistry," says Nobel prize winner Dr. h.c. mult. Manfred Eigen in his laudatory speech. "The work done by Lerner and Schultz has provided fundamental insight into the nature of catalysis, affords us a powerful new approach to control chemical reactivity, and has catalyzed a whole new field centered around exploiting molecular diversity, i.e. mimicry of the immune system." The Paul Ehrlich Prize Each year on Paul Ehrlich's birthday, March 14, the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize ceremony takes place in the historic Paul's Cathedral in Frankfurt. This year, the laudatory speech is held by Nobel prize winner Manfred Eigen who received the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize himself in 1992. The prize will be handed over by Federal Minister of Health, Ulla Schmidt, and the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Paul Ehrlich Foundation, Hilmar Kopper.
