No sharp dividing line separates the 19th from the 20th century. Until the outbreak of World War I, fiction was still dominated by a group of novelists who had already achieved distinction during the Victorian Age such as Thomas Hardy , the Anglo-American Henry James George Moore Joseph Conrad Rudyard Kipling H. G. Wells John Galsworthy and Arnold Bennett . Except for Hardy, who had abandoned the novel in disgust, after the critics' unfriendly reception of Jude the Obscure , all remained extremely active. On July 25 the reactionary Charles X issues his "fatal decrees" suspending freedom of the press, leading to the July Revolution in France, which causes him to abdicate within 3 days and flee for England; Louis-Philippe (1773-1850) , duke of Orleans, the "citizen king", with the support of the Marquis de Lafayette accedes to the throne as the "King of the French"; power changes hands from the Bourbon to the Orleans family in the July Monarchy. What is literature? The term has been defined as "writings in prose or verse." The production of a literary work entails the expression of universal themes, which touch the reader in some way. Literature also has the connotation of being of some lasting quality in form and substance, though some of the most revolutionary writers have not been appreciated until long after their deaths. American Literature
From the rich established culture of legends, folktales and other literature through the histories, religious writings and travel narratives to the wonderful literature of modern America, the people have created a literature of experience.
