B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback The leading Spanish dramatist of the last quarter of the 19th century. Along with poet l, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1904. Echegaray started to write plays at the age of forty-two. His style changed little during his career. Echegaray's works are noted for their high degree of technical skill and their ability to keep audiences engaged despite relatively simple and melodramatic plots. "Like his forebears, he knows how to present conflict, is extremely moving and vitally interested in different temperaments and ideals, and like them he enjoys studying the most complicated cases of conscience. He is complete master of the art of producing in the audience pity and fear, the well-known fundamental effects of tragedy. Just as in the masters of the old Spanish drama, there is in him a striking union of the most lively imagination and the most refined artistic sense. "

Benavente, Jacinto To Top
In addition to his plays, Benavente was an active journalist from 1908 to 1912, writing a weekly column for El Imparcial and also founded the Teatro de los Ni os (Children's theatre) in 1909. In 1912, Benavente was elected a member of the Real Academia Espa ñola. In World War I, he sided with the Germans and his plays became increasingly conservative which drew the ire and criticism of many of his literary contemporaries. Benavente withdrew from writing in response to the attacks from 1920-24, but resumed his trade upon the receipt of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922. Wizened by the prior experiences resulting from his unpopular views, Benavente intentionally withdrew from the public eye during the Civil War to Valencia where he quietly sustained his prolific literary pace. By his death in 1954, Benavente released an incredible 172 plays of somewhat uneven quality. His most popular works include the feminist Cartas de Mujeres (The Letters of Women, 1893), Nido Ajeno (Other Birds Nests, 1894), La Gobernadora (The Governor's Wife, 1901), Noche de Sabado (Saturday Night, 1903), Rosas de Oto

Class Philosophy
This course is based on the premise that active learning is preferable to passive learning. It is also based on the premise that students need to contribute to a course if that course is to be successful. As a result of these premises, you can expect very little in the way of lectures; you can, however, expect a lot of discussion and hands-on activities. Obviously, this course will place a lot of responsibility on you and your fellow classmates. You can expect me as an instructor to carefully select readings and to design appropriate activities to illustrate the issues raised by those readings. For your part, however, you will need to attend regularly, prepare thoughtfully, and shoulder your share of classroom discussions and activities. In this classin all your classes your progress and that of your classmates depends on your willingness to attend, prepare, and participate.
