THOMAS STEARNS ELIOT
Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St. Louis Missouri, in 1888, on both sides his ancestors had been among the earliest settlers to move to Massachusetts from their native England.
He began studying at the Smith Academy and then entered Harvard University. Already in this time he showed his English taste, with his careless way of dressing and his smoking a pipe; typical English behaviour. He was a reserved student due to his inborn shyness and tried to over come this problem by taking dancing and boxing lessons.
Soon he developed interest in literature and philosophy, especially Indian philosophy and studied Pali and Sanskrit.
After taking his M.A. degree, he came to Europe and attended the lectures of Henri Bergson and was deeply influenced by the works of the French Symbolists.
When the First World War broke out he went to England where he studied Greek philosophy and knew Ezra Pound who praised his poems. He tried to enlist in the U.S. Navy, but was refused because of his poor health.
He went to Switzerland where he finished writing The Waste Land; after its publication he was hailed as the most important English-speaking poet of the time. He eventually joined the Church of England and took British citizenship; for this new position he defended himself proclaiming he is "an Angle-Catholic in religion, a classicist in literature and a royalist in politics".

QUOTATIONS
  • A poet critic must write 'programmatic criticism'. Tradition used by a poet is not a mere repetition of the work of the immediate past; rather it comprises the whole of European literature from Homer to the present. The only way of expressing emotion in the town of art is by finding an 'objective correlative'. A poet must possess, 'This disassociation of sensibility'. Facts and analysis are the chief tools of a critic. The Nobel Prize is an election of an individual, chosen from time to time from one nation or another and selected by something like an act of grace, to fill a peculiar role and to become a peculiar symbol. Poetry is usually considered the most local of all arts. While language constitutes a barrier, poetry itself gives us a reason for trying to overcome that barrier. When a poet speaks to his own people, the voices of all other poets of other languages who have influenced him are speaking also. We might remind ourselves that criticism is as inevitable as breathing, and that we should be none the worst for articulating what passes in our minds.

Biography of T. S. Eliot
Eliot has been one of the most daring innovators of twentieth-century poetry. Never compromising either with the public or indeed with language itself, he has followed his belief that poetry should aim at a representation of the complexities of modern civilization in language and that such representation necessarily leads to difficult poetry. Despite this difficulty his influence on modern poetic diction has been immense. Eliot's poetry from Prufrock (1917) to the Four Quartets (1943) reflects the development of a Christian writer: the early work, especially The Waste Land (1922), is essentially negative, the expression of that horror from which the search for a higher world arises. In Ash Wednesday (1930) and the Four Quartets this higher world becomes more visible; nonetheless Eliot has always taken care not to become a "religious poet". and often belittled the power of poetry as a religious force. However, his dramas Murder in the Cathedral (1935) and The Family Reunion (1939) are more openly Christian apologies. In his essays, especially the later ones, Eliot advocates a traditionalism in religion, society, and literature that seems at odds with his pioneer activity as a poet. But although the Eliot of
