Press Release: The 1991 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
KUNGL. VETENSKAPSAKADEMIEN
THE ROYAL SWEDISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
12 October 1992 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 1991 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Professor Richard R. Ernst for his contributions to the development of the methodology of high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
Revolutionary developments make a spectroscopic technique indispensable for chemistry
The 1991 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Professor Richard R. Ernst of the ETH, Zurich, for important methodological developments within nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. NMR spectroscopy has during the last twenty years developed into perhaps the most important instrumental measuring technique within chemistry. This has occurred because of a dramatic increase in both the sensitivity and the resolution of the instruments, two areas in which Ernst has contributed more than anybody else. NMR spectroscopy is today used within practically all branches of chemistry, at universities as well as industrial laboratories. The method has its most important applications as a tool for the determination of molecular structure in solution. It can today be applied to a wide variety of chemical systems, from small molecules (e.g. drugs) to proteins and nucleic acids. Further, chemists use NMR to study interactions between different molecules (e.g. enzyme - substrate, soap - water), to investigate molecular motion, to get information on the rate of chemical reactions and for many other problems. The NMR technique is today also important in related sciences, such as physics, biology and medicine.

Ernst, Richard R. I was born 1933 in Winterthur, Switzerland, where our ancestors resided at least since the 15th century. We lived in a home built in 1898 by my grandfather, a merchant. My father, Robert Ernst, was teaching as an architect at the technical high school of our city. I had the great luck to grow up, together with two sisters, in a town that combined in a unique way artistic and industrious activities. Invaluable art collections and a small but first rank symphony orchestra carry the fame of Winterthur far across the borders of Switzerland. On the other hand, industries producing heavy machinery, like Diesel motors and railway engines, provided the commercial basis of prosperity. I soon became interested in both sides. Playing the violoncello brought me into numerous chamber and church music ensembles, and stimulated my interest in musical composition that I tried extensively while in high school. At the age of 13, I found in the attic a case filled with chemicals, remainders of an uncle who died in 1923 and was, as a metallurgical engineer, interested in chemistry and photography. I became almost immediately fascinated by the possibilities of trying out all conceivable reactions with them, some leading to explosions, others to unbearable poisoning of the air in our house, frightening my parents. However, I survived and started to read all chemistry books that I could get a hand on, first some 19th century books from our home library that did not provide much reliable information, and then I emptied the rather extensive city library.

Term Paper Richard R. Ernst
Richard R. Ernst received the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1991 “for his contributions to the development of the methodology of high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.” (5) Born on August 14, 1933 in Winterthur, Switzerland, Ernst grew up in a house built by his grandfather, a merchant. His father, Robert Ernst, was an architecture teacher at the technical high school in Winterthur. (1)
As he continued through his childhood with two sisters, Ernst developed an interest in composing music by playing his violoncello. Also at an early age, Ernst discovered a case filled with chemicals in the attic that had belonged to his uncle, a metallurgical engineer. For Ernst, this discovery stimulated an immediate interest in chemistry and reactions. He survived many frightening explosions and began to read as much about chemistry as possible. He soon learned that chemistry, not composing, would be his profession.
After completing high school, Ernst studied chemistry at the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich. He received his diploma from ETH in 1956 and continued on at ETH to complete his Ph. D. in physical chemistry in 1962 with the title of "Diplomierter Ingeniur-Chemiker." His thesis work “involved instrumentation and a theoretical study of nuclear magnetic resonance with random excitation.” (1) Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was discovered in 1952 by Nobel Prize winners Felix Bloch and Edward Purcell. NMR can be seen when materials with nuclei possessing magnetic dipole moment are places in a magnetic field. The nucleus of the hydrogen atom, a single proton, is a significant example as it behaves like tiny needles when placed in a magnetic field. These tiny compass needles (called nuclear spins) can, according to the laws of quantum mechanics, orient themselves with respect to the magnetic field in only a few ways. These orientations are characterized by different energy levels. The nuclear spins can be forced to jump between

Three Nobel prize-winners visit the Space Campus in Kiruna
Fr. left: William N. Lipscomb, Richard R. Ernst och Robert Woodrow Wilson. On Thursday 6 December the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and the Space Campus in Kiruna was visited by three Nobel prize-winners: Richard R. Ernst (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1991), William N. Lipscomb (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1976) and Robert Woodrow Wilson (Nobel Prize in Physics 1978). As well as a tour of the campus they also had an opportunity to meet employees, students, local high school teachers and the press in the auditorium. Richard E. Ernst was born in Switzerland in 1933 and received the chemistry prize in 1991 "for his contributions to the development of the methodology of high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy". NMR is a phenomenon that was discovered in the 1940s by two research groups led respectively by Bloch and Purcell in USA (Nobel Prize 1952). Initially the phenomenon was studied solely by physicists, but later the technique came to be used by chemists (for example Ernst) to determine the structure of molecules. In the 1980s the use of magnetic resonance also became common in medicine. William N. Lipscomb was born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, in 1919, received a doctorate from the California Institute of Technology and taught at Harvard University. Han was awarded the chemistry prize in 1976 "for his studies on the structure of boranes illuminating problems of chemical bonding". He has studied the 3-dimensional structures of enzymes and how they catalyse reactions or how they are regulated by allosteric transformations.
