Overview
IBM's rich history of discovery and innovation has brought international recognition. In addition to five Nobel prizes, IBM researchers have been recognized with four U.S. National Medals of Technology, three National Medals of Science and 19 memberships in the National Academy of Sciences. IBM Research has more than 46 members of the National Academy of Engineering and well over 300 industry organization fellows.
Nobel Laureates
Leo Esaki
was awarded a Nobel Prize for Physics for his invention of the electron tunneling effect in semiconductors. Esaki was the co-inventor of semiconductor superlattices and explored the extraordinary properties of these engineered quantum structures.
Gerd K. Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their invention of the Scanning Tunneling Microscope. This invention, in 1981, provided the first-ever look at the topography of surfaces in atom by atom.

Five Don'ts by Leo Esaki
A list of "five don'ts" which anyone with an interest in realizing his or her creative potential should follow. Who knows, it may even help you win a Nobel Prize. $B!!(J Rule number one: Don't allow yourself to be trapped by your past experiences. If you allow yourself to get caught up in social conventions or circumstances, you will not notice the opportunity for a dramatic leap forward when it presents itself: Looking back at the history of the Nobel Prize, you will notice that most of the laureates have received the Nobel Prize for work they had done during their thirties. In my case I was 32 years old when I developed the "Esaki tunnel diode". The point that I am trying to make is that younger people are able to look at things with clearer vision, one that is not clouded by social conventions and past history. $B!!(J Rule number two: Don't allow yourself to become overly attached to any authority in your field the great professor, perhaps. By becoming closely involved with the great professor, you risk losing sight of yourself and forfeiting the free spirit of youth. Although the great professor may be awarded the Novel Prize, it is unlikely that his subordinates will ever receive it. $B!!(J

Videos Statement of 100 Nobel Laureates OSLO, Norway-December 7, 2001 (OTVNewswire) At the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium here yesterday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates have issued a brief but dire warning of the "profound dangers" facing the world. Their statement predicts that our security depends on immediate environmental and social reform. The following is the text of their statement: THE STATEMENT: The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust.
