1. Nobel prize winners support Basque peace initiative
MADRID, Oct 1 (AFP) - Six former Nobel peace laureates including the
Dalai Lama on Monday lent their support to a privately-run peace
conference starting next week in Spain's Basque region, organizers of
the initiative announced.
"We support the specific goal of this peace conference, which will focus
on the search for consensus, on shared principles and procedures, for a
peace process of normalization and co-existence," said a joint statement
from 10 personalities including the six peace prize
winners.
The conference, sponsored by the Basque peace movement Elkarri, will
begin on Sunday, and is supported by the moderate nationalist Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), in power in the autonomous region of northern Spain. The Basque separatist group ETA has since 1968 waged a violent campaign for independence for an area that comprises the Basque regions of northern Spain and southwestern France, killing more than 800 people.

http://www.jubilee2000uk.org/jubilee2000/news/nobel2901.html
Enforced repayment of foreign debt is a "massive and systematic violation of human rights" according to Adolfo Perez Esquivel, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1980 for his human rights work against South American military dictatorships. Esquivel has taken the debt issue as his new human rights campaign. He told the founding conference of Jubilee 2000 Latin America in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, 25-27 January that "the foreign debt is the determinant factor in the disorder of Latin America and the Caribbean. It is a murderous project that has been imposed on us," he said. Other speakers also stressed that debt kills. The archbishop of Honduras, Monsenor Oscar Andres Rodriguez, called the foreign debt "a tombstone pressing down on us". Monsenor Rodriguez felt so strongly about the debt issue that he flew by small plane from a meeting with the Pope in Mexico to attend the conference, and flew immediately back to Mexico for further meetings with the Pope. It is no longer a question of how and why the debt was contracted, both said. "We cannot ask that the debt be repaid if it requires unsupportable sacrifices," Rodrigues said - noting that the Pope has backed this view, even during his visit to Mexico. "We must put aside purely economic criteria and look for solutions to these human problems. We cannot have a world run solely by the logic of profit."

Tú no estabas dispuesto a oírlo.

Juan Carrero Saralegui
Human rights activist and president of the S'Olivar Foundation. Juan Carrero Saralegui was proposed as a candidate for the 2000 Nobel Prize for Peace (the award finally went to Korean president Kim Dae-jung) for his efforts to denounce genocide in the Great Lakes region of Africa. Carrera is the president of the S'Olivar Foundation in Estellencs, on the island of Mallorca. In 1999 he was given the Courage of Conscience Award granted by the Peace Abbey organization of Massachusetts. Juan Carrero Saralegui was born in Arjona (Jaén) on February 18, 1951. At age 19, after three years of Philosophy studies at university, he and a group of friends established a commune on the S'Olivar farm in Mallorca and spent the following four years devoted to meditation, prayer and the study of Theology. In 1974 he became one of the first conscientious objectors in Spain. An admirer of Mahatma Gandhi, h e spent three years in the Andes teaching children of the Quechua tribe in Argentina, near the border with Chile, along with his wife Susana, whom he'd met at the L'Arch community in France, and an Argentinian friend, future Nobel Peace Prize-winner Adolfo Perez Esquivel. At that time the military coup in Argentina took place, and because of their work they were at the risk of reprisals from the new regime. Since 1994 Carrero and his foundation, which was established in 1992, have actively denounced the massacres of Hutus in Rwanda and Burundi. In 1996 he walked one thousand kilometers (more than 600 miles) to Geneva to draw attention to the situation in the Great Lakes region of Africa. One year later he went on a 42-fast in front of the European Union Council headquarters. His campaign was supported by 19 Nobel Prize winners including Rigoberta Menchú, the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his friend Adolfo Perez Esquivel.

"HUMAN LIFE IS SACRED"
An Appeal to Restraint and a Call to Action in a Moment of Crisis by eight Nobel Peace Prize Laureates We are greatly saddened by the tragic events which took place on Tuesday, September 11th , in New York and Washington, D.C. We cannot yet fathom the magnitude of what has happened, and yet we feel impelled to speak in light of what we fear may be an escalation of violence in response. We extend our deepest sympathies and heart_felt condolences to the families and friends of the victims and to the people of the United States. Our prayers accompany you in this difficult period of loss and mourning. The many acts of courage on the part of the rescue teams and the generosity of the citizens of your cities and towns are an inspiration to all of us. Respect for the sacredness and inviolability of human life is a principal article of faith in each of the major world religions. We are heartened by the spontaneous expressions of solidarity by millions of men and women of good will, from all backgrounds, on every continent, and by so many religious and political leaders through the world who have spoken out against this barbarous act of terrorism. There is nothing which can condone an act which has cost the lives of thousands of innocent people. The perpetrators of this deed must be sought out and brought to justice. At the same time, we know that administering justice to those responsible will not resolve the deeper questions of the causes of terrorism. In this regard, we are mindful that every day innocent victims suffer and die in many parts of the world, their only crime being born in a particular place, or into a particular religion, or with a certain skin colour.

Bernat Vicens
Spokesman for the Nomination Committee
For many institutions, organisations and well-known personalities, Juan Carrero's nomination is an important hope for the African Great Lakes region
Juan Carrero's nomination was decided upon in various meetings held in Paris, Brussels and Montreal. Participating in these were, amongst other Africans, the most important leaders of the Rwandan resistance, and the Nobel Peace Laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel. Thus this nomination can be considered to be that of the Rwandan people and of many other Africans of the Great Lakes. For this reason the list of supporters is headed by important African collectives, amongst which stand out the Lobby for the Return of Refugees and Democracy in Rwanda (RDR, the world's major organisation of exiled Rwandans), the Rwandan communities of East Africa, of the Coast of Marfil, of Toulouse, the Burundian community of Canada, and the organisation for Peace, Justice and Development in Rwanda.
The conflict of the African Great Lakes region
The nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize
The effectiveness of this campaign has also ensured that not a single Rwandan Hutu is free of the accusation of genocide. It is from this position that the petition was made to Juan Carrero by important African organisations of this region, and in particular by practically the whole of the Rwandan resistance, that he be the media figure for this cause. This cause also has urgent need of a media campaign, although this time for truth, not deception. Juan Carrero affirmed that he only accepted this nomination from the outset precisely for this potential for it to be changed into an important media campaign that allows a wider understanding of the conflict, that enables the voice to be heard of those who have been systematically demonised and of those who have accompanied them for decades. Something of all this should also be the aim of the Nobel Institute when it awards its Peace prize to as yet unresolved causes like those of Timor, Ireland etc.

February 9, 2003 Don't spend a lot of time wondering whether you can change the world. You can. Just do it. That was the message delivered Saturday to 300 area teenagers at PeaceJam 2003. "If I can do it, any one of you sitting here in this room can do it," said Jody Williams, former secretary, dental assistant, and co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. Williams did it by coordinating the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which shared the Nobel Prize. The campaign began in 1991 with no headquarters, no bank account and a staff of one - Williams. By 1996, there were 1,200 organizations involved in 60 countries.

WMU to host peace conference
by Laura Kirklin
News Writer
March 11, 2003
On March 15-16, Kalamazoo and Western Michigan University will host the first ever Kalamazoo PeaceJam Youth Conference as one of only 15 sites in the country offering the PeaceJam program. PeaceJam is an international education program in which leading Nobel Peace Laureates, such as Oscar Arias and The Dalai Lama, work personally with high school youth to pass on the spirit, skills and wisdom they embody. The goal of this program is to inspire a new generation of peacemakers who will transform their local communities, themselves and the world, according to the program's mission statement. Kalamazoo's visiting Nobel Peace Laureate is Adolpho Pérez Esquivel, an Argentinean artist, educator and human rights activist who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1980 for his human rights leadership. He is now the secretary-general of service for Peace and Justice, a human rights organization in Latin America.

PSU Hosts The World Peace Conference Six Nobel Peace Prize winners took part in a World Peace Conference hosted by Portland State University in May 2001 dovetailing with a three-day visit by the Dalai Lama. The conference aimed at exploring how spirituality can pave the path to world peace. "We wanted to take advantage of the Dalai Lama's visit," said Gary Alan Spanovich, executive director of the conference. The Dalai Lama, who won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1989, visited Oregon to take part in lectures, workshops and public events in his honor. He spoke about his approach to world peace at a luncheon at the Hilton Hotel in Portland at the same day of the conference but was not able to join the panel discussion at PSU because he was scheduled to meet at that time with members of the local Tibetan community. Instead the Venerable Lhakdor, a religious assistant to the Dalai Lama joined the Nobel Peace laureates. The laureates that participated in the conference are Adolfo Perez Esquivel, architect, sculptor and Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1980 for championing human rights in Argentina and other Latin American countries; Robert K. Musil, executive director of Physicians for Social Responsibility, which shared the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize with International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War; William F. Shulz, executive director of Amnesty International, winner of the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize; Betty Williams, a 1976 Nobel winner for brokering the peace accord in Northern Ireland and Dr. Helen Caldicott, co-founder of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.
