Ulf S. von Euler was born in Stockholm on February 7th, 1905, as the second son of Hans von Euler-Chelpin and Astrid Cleve. His father was born in Augsburg, Germany, as the only son of general Rigas von Euler-Chelpin. Hans von Euler-Chelpin received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1929. Ulf's mother was the daughter of Per Teodor Cleve, who was Professor of Chemistry in Uppsala, and the discoverer of the elements thulium and holmium. Astrid Cleve received her Ph. D. in botany and later devoted most of her scientific activities to diatomes and to geology and obtained the title of professor in 1955.
After school years in Stockholm and in Karlstad, Ulf von Euler entered the Karolinska Institute as a medical student in 1922. The scientific atmosphere at home and the regular opportunities to meet scientists - Svante Arrhenius

Euler, Ulf von,
in full ULF SVANTE VON EULER-CHELPIN (b. Feb. 7, 1905, Stockholm, Swed.d. March 9, 1983, Stockholm), Swedish physiologist who, with British biophysicist Sir Bernard Katz and American biochemist Julius Axelrod , received the 1970 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. All three were honoured for their independent study of the mechanics of nerve impulses . Euler was the son of 1929 Nobel laureate Hans von Euler-Chelpin . After his graduation from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Euler served on the faculty of the institute from 1930 to 1971. He joined the Nobel Committee for Physiology and Medicine in 1953 and was president of the Nobel Foundation for 10 years (1966-75). Euler's outstanding achievement was his identification of noradrenaline (norepinephrine), the key neurotransmitter (or impulse carrier) in the sympathetic nervous system. He also found that norepinephrine is stored within nerve fibres themselves. These discoveries laid the foundation for Axelrod's determination of the role of the enzyme that inhibits its action, and the method of norepinephrine's reabsorption by nerve tissues. Euler also discovered the hormones known as prostaglandins, which play active roles in stimulating human muscle contraction and in the regulation of the cardiovascular and nervous systems.

KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET
October 1970
Karolinska Institutet
has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1970 jointly to
Bernard Katz, Ulf von Euler and Julius Axelrod
for their discoveries concerning "the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanisms for their storage, release and inactivation".
Sir Bernard Katz ' discoveries concerning the mechanism for the release of the transmitter acetylcholine from the nerve terminals at the nerve-muscle junction, under the influence of the nerve impulses, are fundamental not only for the understanding of the so-called cholinergic transmission, but are also of primary importance for our knowledge about the synaptic transmission between the nerve cells in the central nervous system.
Professor Ulf von Euler has discovered that the substance noradrenaline serves as neurotransmitter at the nerve terminals of the sympathetic nervous system. He has also shown how this substance is stored in small nerve granules within the nerve fibres of this system.

Ulf Svante von Euler contributed by Blair Smith Ulf Svante von Euler, born in Stockholm, Sweden, came from a long line of scientists. He was the son of Hans von Euler, the recipient of the 1929 Nobel Prize for chemistry. His grandfather, Per Teodor Cleve, discovered the chemical elements thulium and holmium. With a family born interest in the sciences, von Euler began studying medicine at the Karolinska Institute in 1922. His curiosity quickly expanded to pharmacology and physiology. Von Euler eventually returned to the Karolinska Institute to serve as Professor of Physiology, a position he held until 1971. In 1953, he joined the Nobel Committee for Physiology and Medicine, and also served a decade as president of the Nobel Foundation. Finally, von Euler won the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1970. Von Euler is most famous for his detection of norepinephrine, the main neurotransmitter in the sympathetic nervous system. He revealed the storage, distribution, and absorption of this adrenergic neurotransmitter throughout the nerves and organs, as well as its excretion during assorted pathological and physiological conditions. He is also acknowledged for his finding of Substance P, an active polypeptide.

Like Father, Like Son Ulf von Euler, a Swedish physiologist, followed in his father's footsteps when he won the Nobel Prize for physiology or Medicine in 1970. His father, Hans von Euler-Chelpin won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1929, with Arthur Harden, for their work on enzymes. Ulf von Euler, and two colleagues, won the award for research in the chemistry of nerve transmission. His interest in research was inspired when he was just 20 and won a prize for his study of the properties of blood of patients with high fevers. Von Euler and three other scientists shared a $50,000 Stouffer Prize for their work on high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. He served as secretary of the Karolinska Nobel Committee and was Chairman of the Nobel Foundation from 1965 to 1976. He died on this date in 1983.
