J.B. Priestley "I decline to accept the end of man." William Faulkner: Nobel Prize Speech
Stockholm, Sweden
December 10, 1950 "All his life William Faulkner had avoided speeches, and insisted that he not be taken as a man of letters. 'I'm just a farmer who likes to tell stories.' he once said. Because of his known aversion to making formal pronouncements, there was much interest, when he traveled to Stockholm to receive the prize on December 10, 1950, in what he would say in the speech that custom obliged him to deliver. Faulkner evidently wanted to set right the misinterpretation of his own work as pessimistic. But beyond that, he recognized that, as the first American novelist to receive the prize since the end of World War II, he had a special obligation to take the changed situation of the writer, and of man, into account."
Richard Ellmann I feel that this award was not made to me as a man, but to my worka life's work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit, not for glory and least of all for profit, but to create out of the materials of the human spirit something which did not exist before. So this award is only mine in trust. It will not be difficult to find a dedication for the money part of it commensurate with the purpose and significance of its origin. But I would like to do the same with the acclaim too, by using this moment as a pinnacle from which I might be listened to by the young men and women already dedicated to the same anguish and travail, among whom is already that one who will some day stand where I am standing.

William Faulkner: Nobel Prize Speech
Stockholm, December 10, 1950
William Faulkner officially earned the Nobel Prize in Literature for the year 1949, but he did not receive it until the following year, because the Nobel Prize committee could not reach a consensus in 1949. Hence, two Nobel prizes were awarded in 1950, for the prior year and for the present one. The speech Faulkner delivered was not immediately intelligible to his listeners, both because of Faulkner's southern dialect and because the microphone was too distant from his mouth, but when it was printed in newspapers the following day, it was immediately hailed as one of the most significant addresses ever delivered at a Nobel ceremony. The text below is reprinted from Essays, Speeches, and Public Letters I feel that this award was not made to me as a man, but to my work — a life's work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit, not for glory and least of all for profit, but to create out of the materials of the human spirit something which did not exist before. So this award is only mine in trust. It will not be difficult to find a dedication for the money part of it commensurate with the purpose and significance of its origin. An Introduction
Who was William Faulkner?
William Faulkner on the Web is intended as an evolving guide to the life and works of William Faulkner, by all accounts one of America's greatest writers. His apocryphal Yoknapatawpha County , setting for most of his fiction and patterned after his real-life home in Oxford and Lafayette County, Mississippi, is perhaps the most famous address in American literature; it is a familiar location to literature students of all ages who encounter it in such often-anthologized stories as " Barn Burning " and " A Rose for Emily ." Cinema buffs still enjoy films such as To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep which Faulkner co-wrote. Visitors from around the world come here to visit Rowan Oak , his home in Oxford, and to attend the annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference at the University of Mississippi each August. Most important, though, are his novels —

William Faulkner (1897-1962), who came from an old southern family, grew up in Oxford, Mississippi. He joined the Canadian , and later the British, Royal Air Force during the First World War, studied for a while at the University of Mississippi , and temporarily worked for a New York bookstore and a New Orleans newspaper. Except for some trips to Europe and Asia, and a few brief stays in Hollywood as a scriptwriter, he worked on his novels and short stories on a farm in Oxford.
In an attempt to create a saga of his own, Faulkner has invented a host of characters typical of the historical growth and subsequent decadence of the South. The human drama in Faulkner's novels is then built on the model of the actual, historical drama extending over almost a century and a half Each story and each novel contributes to the construction of a whole, which is the imaginary Yoknapatawpha County and its inhabitants. Their theme is the decay of the old South, as represented by the Sartoris and Compson families, and the emergence of ruthless and brash newcomers, the Snopeses. Theme and technique - the distortion of time through the use of the inner monologue are fused particularly successfully in The Sound and the Fury (1929), the downfall of the Compson family seen through the minds of several characters. The novel

WILLIAM FAULKNER
"It is the poet's privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honour and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. " Birthplace

Mississippi, US
Education
He didn't graduate from High School, though by third grade he'd already decided that "when I grow up, I want to be a writer like my great-granddaddy", finding study increasingly boring and playing truant to write romantic pastiches of Swinburne. Entered the University of Mississippi as a war veteran but dropped out after three semesters.
Other jobs
He was a postmaster for three years, but spent his days writing and was eventually asked to resign; while working as a journalist in New Orleans he completed his first novel. In the 30s he became a Hollywood screenwriter, adapting Chandler's The Big Sleep and working on Hemingway's To Have and Have Not (though the commissions he originally requested were newsreels and Mickey Mouse cartoons).

BIO
William Faulkner was one of America's most innovative novelists. In a career lasting more than three decades, Faulkner published 19 novels, more than 80 short stories, 2 books of poems, and numerous essays. He was born in New Albany, Mississippi on September 25, 1897 and lived most of his life in Oxford. Faulkner received the 1949 Nobel Prize for Literature, and two of his novels, A FABLE (1954) and THE REIVERS (1962), each won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. On the morning of July 6, 1962, after twenty days of suffering from back injury, Faulkner died of an unexpected heart attack. He was buried in St. Peter's Cemetery of Oxford.
- William Faulkner (then named "Falkner") was born in September 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi.
- Faulkner knew at an early age what he wanted to do with his life. When he entered third grade (after having skipped second) and was asked what he wanted to do when he grew up, he responded, "I want to be a writer like my great-granddaddy."

William Faulkner, Light In August Book cover from Amazon.com Essay Topics and Critical Commentary Essay Topics How does Faulkner utilize vocabulary and syntax to achieve the "Faulkner style"? What is the significance of the title of the novel, Light in August Identify the most significant symbol in the novel and justify your choice. State one possible theme of the novel, and support your position. Give your opinion on why Light in August is considered an important novel in the canon of world literature, and why it was seminal in the nomination of Faulkner as a Nobel Prize winner. Describe how the setting complements the primary themes of the novel. Describe the Faulkner hero. Compare and contrast one aspect of this novel with another you have read for this class. Instructor's Recommendation: Describe the various ways that Joe Christmas is a twentieth century allegory of Christ. In other words, Faulkner created the character of Joe Christmas to represent Christ. However, Christmas isn't a perfect one-to-one representation of Christ. Faulkner made changes to the allegory to make a point. How is Joe Christmas different than Christ? How is he the same (besides their initials!)? Speculate on why Faulkner made the changes he did; what is his message? Critical Commentary One of Light in August's central characters, the Reverend Gail Hightower, is haunted by memories of his grandfather, who died fighting in the Confederate cavalry. William Faulkner's great-grandfather, William Clark Falkner, was a Civil War veteran, too. Known as the "old colonel," he later wrote several books, including a popular romance, The White Rose of Memphis (1882). When still a boy, William Faulkner heard many inspiring tales about this family patriarch. One day he told his teacher, "I want to be a writer like my great-granddaddy."
