In the first paper, Fermi developed his first theorem of permanent value: that in the vicinity of a world line, space can always be approximated by a pseudo-Euclidean metric (see DSB)., Fermi won the Nobel Prize in 1938 for "his demonstrations of the existence of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation, and for his related discovery of nuclear reactions brought about by slow neutrons." He later was placed in charge of the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago, where he led the research that gave rise to the first atomic bomb.

Fermi Problems Enrico Fermi (1901 - 1954) Who is Enrico Fermi? (Biography - ) ENRICO FERMI (1901-1954) is an Italian physicist best known for his contributions to nuclear physics and the development of quantum theory. In addition to his contribution to theory, he is also noted as an experimentalist. Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize for his physics work on the nuclear process. Shortly after receiving the Nobel Prize, Fermi was forced to flee Italy. He settled in the United States, first at Columbia University and then later at the University of Chicago. During World War II he was a member of the Manhattan project team that developed the atomic bomb in Los Alamos, Mexico. Enrico Fermi, a great physicist who made important experimental and theoretical contributions to nuclear physics, was fond of working out problems, which, at first glance, did not seem to have enough information to allow for a solution. Some physicists like to refer to these sort of problems are Fermi problems. Typically, in such problems, which often involve making estimates, you need to make some assumptions. Unlike typical textbook problems, not all the information you need is handed to you. After reading the problems below, you'll get the idea.

On May 11, 1974, the National Accelerator Laboratory was officially named Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in honor of the Nobel prize winning physicist Enrico Fermi. Fermi excelled in both the theoretical and experimental areas of physics, contributed many ideas to all areas of physical science, and created many tools of physics. The following is a simulated interview based on readings done by the writer. Enrico, thank you for taking time from your very busy schedule to participate in this interview. Please tell us about your work at the University of Chicago. After World War II, the University of Chicago formed the Institute for Nuclear Studies* where I have been able to continue my investigation of the atom's nucleus. The other scientists and I are working to find numerous peaceful uses of nuclear power. To study the particles inside the atom, I'm designing a synchrocyclotron, which when finished will be a powerful atom smasher to help us learn more about the way particles inside the atom behave. Whenever I find I do not have a tool that I need for an idea to work, I create that tool. I have always enjoyed designing and building things. In addition to my research I teach physics classes on the campus of the University. What makes you a teacher your students will remember?

Enrico Fermi Will Be Honored On 34-Cent U.S. Stamp The U.S. Postal Service will honor University of Chicago physicist Enrico Fermi by issuing a new 34-cent stamp in his honor on Saturday, Sept. 29, the centennial of his birth. The Postal Service and the University will commemorate the new stamp during a dedication ceremony from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 29 at Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th St., Chicago.
Following the ceremony, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the University's Enrico Fermi Institute will sponsor a special symposium titled "Fermi Remembered." Speaking at the symposium will be scientists who were students and colleagues of Fermi when he was a professor at the University of Chicago from 1946 until his death in 1954. Speakers will include Nobel laureates Jack Steinberger, S.B. '42, Ph.D. '48, and Murray Gell-Mann, a physics faculty member at the University of Chicago from 1951 to 1954.
Both events are free and open to the public.
Fermi crammed a lot of science into his 53 years on this Earth. He applied his fertile mind to scientific questions ranging from the fundamental characteristics of the atom to the potential for extraterrestrial intelligence, but he also produced the first controlled nuclear chain reaction and conducted pioneering research on the most powerful subatomic particle accelerator of its day.
"What's significant about Fermi is if you look through his career, he never just did the same thing. He kept moving on to new scientific challenges," said Nobel laureate James Cronin, University Professor Emeritus in Physics at the University of Chicago.

Enrico Fermi Nacque a Roma nel 1901. Dopo il liceo si iscrisse alla Scuola Normale di Pisa dove si laureò in fisica nel 1922. Tornato a Roma iniziò un'intensa attività di ricerca presso l'Istituto di Fisica dell'Università, diretta da Corbino, uomo politico e famoso scienziato dell'epoca.
Rendendosi conto delle doti eccezionali di Fermi e nell'intento di far rinascere gli studi di fisica in Italia, Corbino fece istituire a Roma la prima cattedra di Fisica Teorica che fu assegnata appunto ad Enrico Fermi. Questi si era già affermato, in campo internazionale, grazie soprattutto ad un lavoro scientifico sulla statistica antisimmetrica, oggi denominata statistica di Fermi-Dirac. Con l'aiuto di Corbino, Fermi riunì nell'Istituto di Fisica un gruppo di giovani fisici tra cui Ettore Maiorana, Ferretti, Wick, Ageno, Rasetti, Amaldi, Pontecorvo, Segré e il chimico D'Agostino.
Poichè l'Istituto di Fisica si trovava in un edificio all'interno dell'attuale compendio Viminale al quale si accedeva da via Panisperna, il gruppo di fisici fu denominato "i ragazzi di via Panisperna". Sotto la guida geniale di Enrico Fermi essi riuscirono con i loro studi dal 1926 al 1937 a portare la scuola di fisica romana al livello dei migliori istituti di ricerca sia europei che americani. Il gruppo dei "ragazzi di via Panisperna" scoprì i cosiddetti "neutroni lenti", cioè i "proiettili" in grado di disintegrare i nuclei degli atomi, aprendo in tal modo la strada per la fissione nucleare.

Enrico Fermi: genius and giant of science This year marks the centenary of the birth of Enrico Fermi, one of the giants of 20th-century science, and one of the last physicists to be both an accomplished experimentalist and an influential theorist. Here, Gianni Battimelli of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" traces the life of a genius.

Enrico Fermi was born on 29 September 1901 in Rome to a family with no scientific traditions. His passion for natural sciences, and in particular for physics, was stimulated and guided in his school years by an engineer and family friend, Adolph Amidei, who recognized Fermi's exceptional intellectual abilities and suggested admission to Pisa's Scuola Normale Superiore.
After finishing high-school studies in Rome, in 1918 Fermi progressed to the prestigious Pisa Institute, after producing for the admission exam an essay on the characteristics of the propagation of sound, the authenticity of which the commissioners initially refused to believe.
Studies at Pisa did not pose any particular difficulties for the young Fermi, despite his having to be largely self-taught using material in foreign languages because nothing existed at the time in Italian on the new physics emerging around relativity and quantum theory. In those years in Italy, these new theories were absent from university teaching, and only mathematicians like Tullio Levi-Civita had the knowledge and insight to see their implications.

Fermi's experimental work on beta-decay in radioactive materials provided further evidence for the existence of the neutrino, as predicted by Austrian physicist Wolfgang Pauli. At the University of Chicago, Fermi built the first nuclear reactor 1942. This was the basis for studies leading to the atomic bomb and nuclear energy.
With British physicist Paul Dirac , Fermi studied the quantum statistics of fermion particles, which are named after him.
