WORLD SCIENTISTS' CALL FOR ACTION
AT THE KYOTO CLIMATE SUMMIT
Five years ago, in the World Scientists' Warning to Humanity , 1600 of the world's senior scientists sounded an unprecedented warning: Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms. Addressed to political, industrial, religious, and scientific leaders, the Warning demonstrated that the scientific community had reached a consensus that grave threats imperil the future of humanity and the global environment. However, over four years have passed, and progress has been woefully inadequate. Some of the most serious problems have worsened. Invaluable time has been squandered because so few leaders have risen to the challenge. The December 1997 Climate Summit in Kyoto, Japan, presents a unique opportunity. The world's political leaders can demonstrate a new commitment to the protection of the environment. The goal is to strengthen the 1992 Framework Convention on Climate Change by agreeing to effective controls on human practices affecting climate. This they can and must do, primarily by augmenting the Convention's voluntary measures with legally binding commitments to reduce industrial nations' emissions of heat-trapping gases significantly below 1990 levels in accordance with a near-term timetable.

The University Today Today the TU is made up of 12 faculties, with 240 departments, over 400 professors and just under 9,000 scientific researchers and other employees. In 1968, the year of the university's centenary, there were 8,000 students. Today there are 19,000 students matriculated in 70 different degree courses. The main campus can be found in Arcisstrasse, in the heart of Munich, and there are two other campuses in Garching and Weihenstephan. The research which takes place at the TU is recognized worldwide. The quality of the teaching is demonstrated by the high qualifications of the graduates. The TU is one of the universities with the shortest times needed to graduate. Experience has shown that graduates from the TU experience no problems in the transition from studying to professional life, as many of them are able to secure contacts during their time at the university. In conjunction with the other Munich universities the TU has an excellent infrastructure at its disposal, with regard to the conditions for students and also the opportunities for further interdisciplinary training, and the leisure time facilities. Particularly worth mentioning here are the libraries, the offer made by the language center, the computer center and the sport centre. Click

    Fischer, Ernst Otto
German inorganic chemist who showed that transition metals can bond chemically to carbon. He and English chemist Geoffrey Wilkinson shared the 1973 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their work on organometallic compounds, which they carried out independently.
Fischer was born in Munich and educated at the Munich Technical University. He remained there, becoming professor 1959.
Investigating a synthetic compound called ferrocene, both Fischer and Wilkinson separately came to the conclusion that each molecule of ferrocene consists of a single iron atom sandwiched between two five-sided carbon rings - an organometallic compound. A combination of chemical and physical studies, finally confirmed by X-ray analysis, showed the compound's structure.
With this work came the general realization that transition metals can bond chemically to carbon, and other ring systems were then studied. All the elements of the first transition series have now been incorporated into molecules of this kind and all except that of manganese have the ferrocene-type structure. Only ferrocene, however, is stable in air, the others being sensitive to oxidation.
