AHMED ZEWAIL for his studies of the transition states of chemical reactions using femtosecond spectroscopy. Frederick Soddy (1877 - 1956) Químico britânico nascido em Eastbourne, England, um dos pioneiros da teoria da estrutura atômica  Educado no Eastbourne College, University College of Wales, e na University of Oxford. Foi conferencista em físico-química e radioatividade na University of Glasgow (1904-1914) e professor de química de Oxford (1919-1936), quando se retirou da vida acadêmica. Juntando-se a Ernest Rutherford, passou a pesquisar sobre transformações radioativas do núcleo atômico e no desenvolvimento da teoria da estrutura atômica. Elaborou o mecanismo e as trajetórias das desintegrações radioativas e demonstrou a possibilidade da existência dos isótopos (1913), inclusive criando este termo (Ver Theodore William Richards). Ganhou o Prêmio Nobel de Química (1921) por este feito.
