James Franck (1882-1964) He was born in Germany and received the Nobel physics prize in 1925 with G. Hertz, for their experimental work on the behavior of free electrons in gases confirming some parts of Bohr's atomic theory. However, he resigned from the chair in Goettingen and moved to the United States after Hitler assumed power. During the World War II, he was working in the Metallurgical Laboratory of Chicago University, one of the centers for Manhattan Project; and toward the end of the War, he, together with several colleagues, submitted the "Franck Report" to the government, urging to avoid the use of the atomic bomb agaist Japan, and to prepare for the international control of the atomic power. Although the journalism usually praises Leo Szilard for his display of "conscientious and responsible" behavior, it seems that the Franck Report is the main source of all subsequent movements and discussions of the responsibility of the scientist. He studied chemistry at the University of Heidleburg and then physics at the University of Berlin. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Berlin in 1906. From 1911-1918, he lectured at the University of Berlin. After World War I, he became the head of the Physics Division at Kaiser Wilhelm Institute. In 1925 Franck and Gustav Ludwig Hertz received the Nobel Prize in Physics for joint work investigating the behavior of free electrons in various gases and the inelastic impacts of electrons on atoms. Their investigations resulted in experimental proof of some of the basic concepts of Bohr's atomic theory. After the Nazi regime assumed power in Germany, Franck moved his family to Baltimore, Maryland and became a professor at Johns Hopkins University. In 1938, he became a professor at the University of Chicago. Franck headed a group of atomic scientists in preparing the "Franck Report" for the US War Department. The report urged an open demonstration of the atomic bomb in an uninhabited place as an alternative to using the weapon without warning on Japan.

    James Franck: A versatile scientist
JAMES FRANCK was born on August 26, 1882 at Hamburg, Germany, as the son of a banker. He attended the local school and then went to the University of Heidelberg to study Chemistry and Geology. After two semesters, he moved to the University of Berlin, then the centre of Physics in Germany. The colloquium addressed by Rubens, Warburg and Planck played a formative influence in Franck's academic career. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree for his work on ionic mobility in gases (1906). Turbulent career The following year (1907) he became research assistant to Professor Rubens and served for some time in World War I. Afterwards he worked till 1920 under Fritz Haber at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for physical chemistry. He was appointed to a chair at the University of Goettingenr. Max Born (1882-1970) accepted the chair of theoretical physics on the condition of Franck being appointed to a chair in the university. With him Franck formed a life-long friendship, which resulted in building the nucleus of a scientific community at Goettingen. Although a Jew, he was initially allowed to continue in office; but he refused to accept the dismissal of his colleagues. In April 1933, he resigned his post and published a courageous statement of protest against the new laws. Within a few months the whole group including Max Born had to leave Germany.
