Alfred Hermann Fried (November 11, 1864-May 5, 1921) was born in Vienna, but pursued most of his active journalistic career in Germany. Leaving school at the age of fifteen, he worked in his native city as a bookseller, then a few years later went to Berlin where he opened his own press in 1887.
Influenced by Bertha von Suttner , Fried became interested in the peace movement, founded the Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft [German Peace Society], and edited its major publication, Monatliche Friedenskorrespondenz [Monthly Peace Correspondence], from 1894 to 1899. Having persuaded Baroness von Suttner to serve as editor, he started a peace journal, naming it Die Waffen Nieder! [Lay Down Your Arms], the title of the Baroness' famous antiwar novel . In 1899 this was replaced by Die Friedenswarte [The Peace Watch], which he edited and which Norman Angell Annuaire de la vie internationale , which reflected his growing interest in international cooperation, particularly as exemplified by the Pan-American movement and the work of the Hague Conferences.

(b. Nov. 11, 1864, Vienna, Austriad. May 5, 1921, Vienna), Austrian pacifist, publicist, co-founder of the German peace movement, and co-winner (with Tobias Asser ) of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1911. In 1891 Fried, in Berlin, founded the pacifist periodical Die Waffen nieder! ("Lay Down Your Arms!"), from 1899 called Friedenswarte ("The Peacekeeper"). In 1892 he founded the Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft (German Peace Society), which became the focus for the German pacifist movement before World War I. Fried advocated "fundamental pacifism" and believed that "international anarchy" should be met by both legislative measures and spiritual regeneration. With the outbreak of World War I he immigrated to Switzerland in protest against German policy. As editor of ("Papers for International Understanding and Inter-State Organization"), he worked for an immediate peace. Fried protested against the Treaty of Versailles but warned the Germans against attempting to revise it by force. His works include Handbuch der Friedensbewegung

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.
