    Nobel Prize in Chemistry Rare Win for Japan TOKYO (Reuters) - For Japan, Tuesday's announcement that Hideki Shirakawa had shared in the Nobel Prize for chemistry was a rare accolade in an area that has often eluded them
    Shirakawa, an honorary professor at Tsukuba University northeast of Tokyo, was only the ninth Japanese ever to win a Nobel Prize and the first since 1994 when Kenzaburo Oe won the prize for literature
    ``I wasn't expecting this at all. I feel very honored,'' Shirakawa, 64, told Japanese television network TBS.
    It was the second Japanese prize in chemistry following Kenichi Fukui in 1981
    The prize came largely as the result of an accident . In 1976, a student at Shirakawa's lab discovered that plastic polymers, which usually act as insulators for electricity , can in fact be conductors in some instances.
    This has opened a wide range of possibilities , such as plastic sheets that can be used as computer screens and then rolled up and carried around like a newspaper
    Other potential uses include micro-sized televisions, windows that change color and illuminated wallpaper.

    Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude.
    An Appeal by 104 Nobel Laureates
    FOR PEACE IN CROATIA
    During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war.
    • We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.

    Introduction Like in any other organized community, the global scientific one has adopted a series of processes through which to honor its exceptional members and make them known to the wider public by making known their participation in the advance of both science itself as well as the society in general.
    The official scientific communities are not very "young" since the oldest surviving ones are already entering their fourth century of existence. During this period and at certain moments they have honored their distinguished members by various means and they have also honored non-members by awarding them emeritus memberships. Several degrees of honors have been legislated and various kinds of medals have been prepared for this purpose, according to both the financial and the intellectual status of each scientific community and in relation to the degree of approval it was enjoying both in its locality and globally.
    The highest honor that a scientist can receive is, unambiguously and since the beginning of the 20th century, the Nobel prize.     RUN OF PAPER A pioneering physicist at Harvard, Prof. Nicolaas Bloembergen, yesterday was named co-recipient of the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physics for work leading to development of lasers. Bloembergen, 61, of Lexington, will share half of the award with Prof. Arthur Schawlow of Stanford University. The other half goes to Kai Siegbahn of Uppsala University in Sweden. Also yesterday, the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences announced that Prof. Roald Hoffman of Cornell University and Prof. Kenichi Fukui of Kyoto University in Japan, had won the 1981 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. The two Nobel Prizes are worth $180,000 each, and will be split among the recipients. Bloembergen, who came to Harvard to work with Prof. Edward Purcell in 1949, was given the award, the academy said, "for the development of laser spectroscopy." This work, he said during a news conference, involves study of the interaction of light with matter.

The evening we arrived, we had a great kaiseki dinner at Sakamoto, one on our favorite kaiseki restaurants in Kyoto. It is in the Gion district and is on the river with a great view during the cherry blossom season. After dinner, we went to Minoya, a tea house. I wrote about tea houses in 1994 . Ichisuzu, whose photo appears in my entry from 1994 joined us. The picture to the right is a picture of Mizuka and Ichisuzu. Ichisuzu told us that Mamehide who I also met in 1994 left Kyoto to go to school to learn to be a painting restoration professional and that she was moving to Italy soon. She is the talk of the town.

    • Latter half of the Heian Period(794 - 1192) - The main building of Ujigami Shrine was built.
