Published on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 by the New York Times 41 Nobel Laureates Sign Against a War Without International Support by William J. Broad Forty-one American Nobel laureates in science and economics issued a declaration yesterday opposing a preventive war against Iraq without wide international support. The statement, four sentences long, argues that an American attack would ultimately hurt the security and standing of the United States, even if it succeeds. The signers, all men, include a number who at one time or another have advised the federal government or played important roles in national security. Among them are Hans A. Bethe, an architect of the atom bomb; Walter Kohn, a former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon; Norman F. Ramsey, a Manhattan Project scientist who readied the Hiroshima bomb and later advised NATO; and Charles H. Townes, former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon and chairman of a federal panel that studied how to base the MX missile and its nuclear warheads. In addition to winning Nobel prizes, 18 of the signers have received the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest science honor.

On the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates warn that our security hangs on environmental and social reform
The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. Also See:

It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in co-operative international action, legitimized by democracy. It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.

24. The Importance Of Nitric Oxide

Press Release: The 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
NOBELFÖRSAMLINGEN KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET
THE NOBEL ASSEMBLY AT THE KAROLINSKA INSTITUTE
12 October 1998 Summary
Nitric oxide (NO) is a gas that transmits signals in the organism. Signal transmission by a gas that is produced by one cell, penetrates through membranes and regulates the function of another cell represents an entirely new principle for signalling in biological systems. The discoverers of NO as a signal molecule are awarded this year´s Nobel Prize. Background Nitric oxide protects the heart, stimulates the brain, kills bacteria etc. It was a sensation that this simple, common air pollutant, which is formed when nitrogen burns, for instance in automobile exhaust fumes, could exert important functions in the organism. It was particularly surprising since NO is totally different from any other known signal molecule and so unstable that it is converted to nitrate and nitrite within 10 seconds. NO was known to be produced in bacteria but this simple molecule was not expected to be important in higher animals such as mammals. Further research results rapidly confirmed that NO is a signal molecule of key importance for the cardiovascular system and it was also found to exert a series of other functions. We know today that NO acts as a signal molecule in the nervous system, as a weapon against infections, as a regulator of blood pressure and as a gate keeper of blood flow to different organs. NO is present in most living creatures and made by many different types of cells.

Americans Win Nobel for Medicine
STOCKHOLM, Sweden
Winners, generally not known outside the medical community, have made discoveries that sound small on paper but carry large consequences.
(AP) Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad of the United States won the Nobel Medicine Prize today for discoveries that shed light on the cardiovascular system.
They discovered how nitric oxide acts as a signal molecule for the body's blood vessels, a breakthrough with applications ranging from hardening of the arteries to impotence.
Understanding how nitric oxide transmits the signals has sparked research on a wide range of new drugs, including those that can be used in the treatment of heart problems, atherosclerosis, shock and impotence.
Louis J. Ignarro Because of their work, "we know today that nitric oxide acts as a signal molecule in the nervous system, as a weapon against infections and as a regulator of blood pressure," said the citation from the Karolinska lnstitute.

Robert Furchgott is an American pharmacologist who, along with Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad, was co-awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery and demonstration that nitric oxide can act as a signaling molecule. His efforts were a major part in uncovering an entirely new mechanism by which blood vessels in the body relax and widen. His research and contributions opened an active field of research into the behavior of nitric oxide.
Furchgott was born on June 4, 1916 in Charleston, SC and lived there until the age of thirteen. In 1929, his family decided to move to Orangeburg, SC. Later, in 1937, Furchgott received his B.S. in chemistry from the University of North Carolina and in 1940 he received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Northwestern University. He joined SUNY-Brooklyn's department of pharmacology in 1956, a position he held until 1988, when he became an adjunct professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida.
Furchgott was able to demonstrate that cells in the endothelium, or inner lining, of blood vessels produce a signaling molecule. The molecule, which he named endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) signals smooth muscle cells in blood vessel walls to relax, dilating the vessels. The research done by Furchgott was very important in the development of the highly successful anti-impotence drug sildenafil citrate, more commonly known as Viagra. Researchers have suggested that nitric oxide could be a key to improved treatments for heart disease, shock, and cancer.
