The March of Dimes Story The Nobel Laureates
Over the years, several scientists connected with the March of Dimes have won the Nobel Prize. Among them are:
Dr. Linus Pauling: discovered relationship between molecular structure newborn screening and human diseases.
Dr. John F. Enders, Dr. Thomas Weller and Dr. Frederick Robbins: developed tissue culture method for growing polio virus. Dr. James D. Watson: identified double helix structure of DNA. Dr. Max Delbruck: showed how genes direct normal development and mutations cause abnormal development. Dr. D. Carleton Gajdusek: discovered role of unconventional infectious agents in certain rare degenerative brain disorders. Dr. Joseph L. Goldstein: identified cellular cause of familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disorder causing very high cholesterol in the blood. Dr. Edward B. Lewis and Dr. Eric F. Wieschaus: identified master genes that control early structural development of the body.

against the aggression on Croatia
Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude.
An Appeal by 104 Nobel Laureates
FOR PEACE IN CROATIA
During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war.
  • We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.

NINDS at 50: Celebrating 50 Years of Brain Research
Lewis P. Rowland, M.D.
Writing the history of an institution whose influence has been as deep and wide as the NINDS was not an easy assignment. The author of this history of the NINDS not only had to research and write about five decades of institutional change and progress, but also had to encompass within that story the incredible advances that have occurred in neuroscience and neurology over the past 50 years. Lewis P. “Bud” Rowland, M.D., was willing to tackle the task and his worthy accomplishment follows in the pages of this text... Dr. Rowland’s career has spanned both clinical and academic neurology. It has given him an advantageous place from which to view the course of neuroscience over a lifetime devoted to unraveling the mysteries and mechanisms of neurological disorders. Within this book you will find the stories of some of the extraordinary individuals, who – either as intramural researchers, administrative directors, or extramural grantees – encouraged exploration or made discoveries themselves that permanently changed how we understand the workings of the brain. You will also find evidence for the continuous emphasis of moving basic science to clinical application – from “bench to bedside.” From the Foreword by Audrey S. Penn, M.D. NINDS has been one of the most powerful motors that pulled and pushed the rise of modern neuroscience. This book was written in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the institute. Its history and the history of neurology and neuroscience are essentially one. Well written, and lavishly accompanied by photographs that span the last half-century, this book will be a welcome addition to the library of everyone in brain research and the clinical neurosciences.

Introduction: What are prions? Originally thought to be viral mediators of disease that were described as transmissible encephalopathies, spongiform encephalopathies and slow virus diseases , prions, ( pro teinaceous in fectious particles) have been determined to be misfolded, protease resistant proteins which can mediate transmission of disease.
Prions have been implicated in a quartet of human diseases, specifically kuru Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease,(CJD Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker , (GSS) disease, and fatal familial insomnia , (FFI). In sheep, scrapie is believed to be caused by prions and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is a prion disease in cattle.
Stanley Prusiner
won the Nobel Prize in 1997 for first proposing the remarkable hypothesis that these prion diseases were caused by misfolded proteins, and furthermore, elucidating the gene and a mechanism by which the misfolded wild type protein might bring about the amyloid plaques observed clinically. The seminal paper in which some of this information was published is available here This is the third figure from the report

Did Cannibalism Prevent Brain-Wasting Disease?
Study links ritual eating and prion disorders such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob
By Amanda Gardner
HealthScoutNews Reporter THURSDAY, April 10 (HealthScoutNews) Our ancestors may have been indulging in more "brain food" than we thought, which might have been good for them and for us. The discovery of genes that protect against prion diseases has led British researchers, writing in the April 11 issue of Science , to suggest that cannibalism among our prehistoric forebears may have been widespread. Others think the theory is a bit farfetched. "That is a real stretch," says Dr. Paul Brown, senior investigator with the National Institutes of Health, who did similar research and published it two years ago in the Journal of Infectious Diseases Prions are a certain type of protein which, when present normally in the human body, cause no harm. When the prions fold into a different shape, however, they can cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD, or the human equivalent of "mad cow" disease) and other so-called prion diseases. These diseases cause brain degeneration and eventually death and can, in fact, be spread by eating contaminated body parts, human or otherwise. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is simply the most recent example of the phenomenon. Another prion disease, called kuru or "laughing death," caused consternation earlier in the century.

Out of Prison, Nobelist Heads for Europe
Scientists in half a dozen countries have been vying to work with Nobel laureate D. Carleton Gajdusek, who was released from prison this week after serving a year on charges of child sexual abuse. Gajdusek immediately jetted off for the Continent, where he has enough offers to keep him busy indefinitely. Gajdusek shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1976 for his groundbreaking research into kuru, a brain disease similar to bovine spongiform encephalopathy that affected tribes in New Guinea. In 1996, the virologist was charged with sexually abusing a teenaged Micronesian boy living in his home ( Science , 12 April 1996, p. 203). After pleading guilty in February 1997 as part of a plea bargain, Gajdusek resigned as chief of the National Institutes of Health's Laboratory of Central Nervous System Studies and was later sentenced to 18 months in prison. Now that he's free, Gajdusek "wishes to roll around among different labs like Diogenes in a barrel, as he expressed it," says Georg Klein of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, where Gajdusek is expected to show up in July. Then, in September, he will begin a 6-month visiting professorship at the Department of Human Retrovirology of the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, arranged by virologist and AIDS researcher Jaap Goudsmit. Says Goudsmit, who worked as a postdoc in Gajdusek's lab from 1979 to 1981, "I'm very fond of him. He is still very smart and he knows a lot about viruses. It will be wonderful to have him."
