Roger Martin du Gard, french novelist and

Literature in 1937. Martin du Gard and Gide's
friendship lasted nearly forty years, beginning
    as a student/mentor relationship it became a
friendship of equals. Few other friends put
up with so many of Gide's eccentricities as
Martin du Gard did. The correspondance
is collected within the pages of Gide Journals
(Knopf, various dates) and within Roger Martin du Gard's diary excerpts published in Recollections of Andre Gide This excerpt is taken from Martin du Gard's book Recollections of Andre Gide (Viking Press, 1953) November, 1913 At last I have met Andre Gide! Last Sunday I was invited to the Nouvelle Revue Francaise before dinner. It was their monthly reception for contributors and friends. In the shop on the rue Madame, I found about a dozen young men, grouped round Gaston Gallimard and Jean Schlumberger (the author of L'Inquiete paternite). On the counter, between the accountant's ledgers and the typewriter, were some cups, none of them matching, and a plateful of dry buns. The editorial secretary, a tall, thin, and very young man with a graceful awkwardness of manner, had a smile for us all as he handed round the tea. We might have been in a boy's club. His name is Jacques Riviere. (Copeau is still nominally in charge of the magazine; but sine Vieux-Colombier opened, not long ago, he has no time for anything but this theater.) I had already met Jean Schlumberger. As he moved from one to another of us there was a well-mannered coolness about him: even he himself seemed intimidated by it, and it was touching to see how he tried to transform it into an appearance of smiling good nature...

    The Politics of Prose
    Book Reviews
    BY ROGER GATHMAN
    February 18, 2000:
    Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort
    Knopf, 784 pp., $35
When he died, he was known primarily for two novels. One, Jean Barois , took Zola's naturalism a step further by making a novel out of a collage of sources letters, newspaper clippings, and interspersed narrative. The other novel, Spring, 1914 , was part of the vast series The Thibaults , written in the Thirties. At the time, there was a fad for immense fresco-novels. That fad has long faded, and it would take a braver man than this reviewer to venture into all eight volumes of The Thibaults Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort was unfinished at the time of Martin du Gard's death. The last 200 or so pages of it are merely notes, in fact. It is easy to imagine the work getting the Thibault treatment. Although it is in bad taste to say so, Martin du Gard's death made this a much better novel even, as the translator claims, a great one. The magnificent essence of the thing isn't spoiled by infinite addenda. Maumort is an officer in retirement when, in 1940, France surrenders to the Nazis. He locks himself in his library at his estate, Le Saillant, and as the Germans occupy the grounds and the rest of the house, he proceeds to write down his memoirs. Maumort casts his mind back to the society of Second Republic from about 1870 to 1900 and writes with that love of the past that goes beyond love and hits at some of the hard truths of history: its material life, its lost busy-ness, its hopelessly wrong prejudices. Martin du Gard was a pacifist, which makes it all the more fascinating that he concedes the novel to Maumort's voice. As an officer, Maumort writes with the assurance of a man who has absorbed the saying of Clausewitz's that the goal of war is to absolutely disarm the other side. His candid balancing of the bad habits and talents of others is, we gradually see, his way of "defeating" them, of making them yield to the limits of his own egotism.

    AUTHORS ON THE WEB
    A Collection of Biographical Sketches
This page is an attempt to bring together literary author biographies available on the World Wide Web. The biographies vary in quality, timeliness, length, and authority. If you don't find a biography here and know of one, please send it along. If there is no biography available, write one and send it along. It will take time for this page to become one of substance. And, in keeping with the beauty of the medium, it will continually grow and change. Credit for this page must go to Dr. Gretchen Whitney at The University of Tennessee where I was a graduate student in the School of Information Science . Dr. Whitney's "dead German" assignment gave me inspiration for this page. She also taught me HTML. She may have created a monster. Last revised: August 17, 2002. As a new dimension to this page, I am attempting to locate biographies on Nobel Prize winners in Literature. Those I include will include a notation, (Nobel, year).
