June 28, 2001 EXTRA Read about it! From Sunday through Wednesday afternoon, the weather could be described as nothing less than simply beautiful. Crystal clear skies hung over distant Alps, creating a setting fit for a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. However, the meteorological spell broke Wednesday evening as dark clouds, thunder, and showers rolled in over the Bodensee (Lake Constance). Cool showers continued through the night and cloudy, threatening skies persisted Thursday morning. Priscilla Campbell (ORISE) gives the group the daily information briefing in the breakfast room of the hotel. This morning, the last day of activities at the Inselhalle, she tells the group that Friday morning they need to be packed, get breakfast, check out, and be ready to board the ferry to Mainau by 8 a.m. sharp. Today is the last day of activities at the Inselhalle. The morning will begin with a roundtable discussion where seven laureates on stage take turns introducing their topics, then exchange comments and questions, and finally take questions from the students gathered in the hall. This will be followed by a final round of afternoon discussions with individual laureates. Tomorrow, the closing ceremonies will be held on the island of Mainau (pronounced MY-now), home of Count and Countess Bernadotte. The laureates and students will board the ferry for the two-hour trip to Mainau. This will be one last opportunity for the students to engage the laureates in conversation.

Scientists give their verdict
Nearly 30 scientists, winners of the most prestigious international awards, have given their verdict on the strengths and weaknesses of European research. At an informal meeting in Lisbon in March, they told European research ministers what they expect from Community policy. Here is what they had to say. 'I nsistence on the pursuit of useful and profitable goals ignores the essential fact that the applications of fundamental research are usually unknown and cannot therefore be planned in advance,' points out Christian de Duve (winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, 1974). 'This does not mean that applied research must be neglected. But researchers should be alerted to the possible applications of their work and encouraged to participate in their development.' No innovation without upstream commitment
Although unanimity is rare, this is one point on which the scientists interviewed most certainly agreed - and sent out an SOS. Fundamental research requires a long-term vision and needs support - the investment made is rarely lost. Just take a look across the Atlantic. The importance attached to 'generic research' and the scope available to scientists to move from ideas to innovation means that the Americans 'perform better and react more rapidly,' as Heinrich Rohrer (Nobel Prize in Physics, 1986) puts it.
