Walter Gilbert: Genome Provides Parts List
    By Malorye Branca
    Bio-IT World (online)
    Walter Gilbert
Carl M. Loeb Professor, Harvard University
Nobel Prize Laureate in Chemistry The earlier feeling that just the genome would explain everything was misguided. Now, it’s broadly realized that the genome provides us with the parts list, and the interpretation of what those genes do depends on understanding other processes, such as protein-protein interactions. This is important because we now recognize that a lot of intercellular signaling is between proteins themselves, rather than just between proteins and small molecules. For example, we found that if you put a phosphate on tyrosine (a well-known signaling process), another protein binds there. The study of this kind of signaling has expanded greatly over the last five to ten years. Personally, I’m delighted with the progress that’s been made in genomics. Back in the ’80s, I thought it would take many decades to get a reference genome, and I never expected the genome would immediately answer the most important questions. It would provide a vital stimulus to all of biological research, however. And there has been tremendous growth in the number of ways to identify relevant genes and their connections “The biggest surprise is RNAi. Clearly, RNA is doing more things around the cell than we are yet aware of.”
