Extracts from Introduction
to the stage version by Nigel Williams 'And did you enjoy being little savages?' said Sir William Golding to the cast of the King's School Wimbledon production of Lord of the Flies. 'Ye-eahh!' they said. The thirty or forty small boys looked at him. This was the autumn of 1992 and Bill had been forty years out of teaching. He was a Nobel prizewinner. He had written what many (including me) think the greatest novel in English since the Second World War. But he was still a schoolmaster and the kids knew class when they saw it.
said one of them. Bill grinned then. 'Well done!' he said. With his white sailor's beard, canny expression and solid, physical grace, he didn't look at all like an author. He looked as if he had just come back from a round-the-world sailing trip. He had a peasant simplicity too - the aspect of a man who lives off the land and knows the value of things. Bill Golding was, in spite of his great fame, not an arrogant man. He was, in my brief experience of him, interested in people, not as fans or material, but because he thought of himself, not as a guru or a celebrity, but as one of them Nigel Williams, 1995

Nobel Prize for Literature
Literature is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred 's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction." This award is granted not for a single book, but for an author's entire body of work, and hence usually goes to a well-established writer. This year's winner is Sir V. S. Naipaul, "for having united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see the presence of suppressed histories." Sir Naipaul will be speaking at a bookstore event on November 8th at the Boston Public Library. V. S. B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback William Golding (1911-1993) - in full Sir Willam Gerald Golding English novelist who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983. The choice was unexpected, because the internationally famous novelist Graham Greene (1904-1991) was considered the strongest candidate from the English writers. In many works Golding has revealed the dark places of human heart, when isolated individuals or small groups are pushed into extreme situations. His work is characterized by exploration of 'the darkness of man's heart', deep spiritual and ethical questions. "Twenty-five years ago I accepted the label 'pessimist' thoughtlessly without realising that it was going to be tied to my tail, as it were, in something the way that, to take an example from another art, Rachmaninoff's famous Prelude in C sharp minor was tied to him. No audience would allow him off the concert platform until he played it. Similarly critics have dug into my books until they could come up with something that looked hopeless. I can't think why. I don't feel hopeless myself." (from Nobel Lecture William Golding was born in the village of St. Columb Minor in Cornwall. His father was a schoolmaster who had radical convictions in politics and a strong faith in science. Golding started writing at the age of seven, but following the wishes of his parents, he studied natural sciences and English at Brasenose College, Oxford. His first book, a collection of poems, appeared a year before Golding received his B.A.
