Joseph L. Goldstein was born on April 18, 1940, in Sumter, South Carolina, the only son of Isadore E. and Fannie Alpert Goldstein. The family owned and operated a clothing store in Kingstree, South Carolina, a town of 5000 people. After his education in the primary and secondary public schools of Kingstree, Goldstein attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and received the B.S. degree in chemistry, summa cum laude , in 1962. He then attended Southwestern Medical School of the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas where he was inspired to pursue a career in academic medicine by Donald W. Seldin, then and now Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine. During his last year in medical school, Seldin offered Goldstein a future faculty position if he would become trained in genetics and return to Dallas to establish a division of medical genetics in the Department of Internal Medicine. After receiving the M.D. degree in 1966, Goldstein moved to Boston where he was an Intern and Resident in Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (1966-68).It was at the Massachusetts General Hospital that Goldstein first met and developed a friendship with

April 18, 1940, Sumter, S.C., U.S.), American molecular geneticist who, along with Michael S. Brown , was awarded the 1985 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their elucidation of the process of cholesterol metabolism in the human body. Goldstein received his B.S. degree from Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va., in 1962 and obtained his medical degree from the Southwestern Medical School of the University of Texas at Dallas in 1966. Goldstein became friends with Brown when they were both working as interns at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1966 to 1968. Goldstein then conducted research under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health from 1968 to 1972, studying genetically predisposing factors that caused the accumulation of blood cholesterol in people prone to heart attacks. He returned to teach at the Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1972 and was there reunited with his colleague Brown. The two men then began a concerted study of the processes affecting the accumulation of cholesterol in the bloodstream. In the course of their research they discovered that low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which are primary cholesterol-carrying particles, are withdrawn from the bloodstream into the body's cells by receptors on the cells' surface. The genetic absence of these LDL receptors was found to be the cause of familial hypercholesterolemia, a disorder in which the body's tissues are incapable of removing cholesterol from the bloodstream. The new understanding of the cell receptors' role in the regulation of cholesterol levels in the bloodstream spurred the successful use of drugs and the manipulation of diet in lowering blood cholesterol levels.

Overview of this Year's Awards: Joseph L. Goldstein, Chairman of Lasker Jury
Joseph L. Goldstein Scientific Duopolies Far-reaching advances in the medical sciences often result from symbiotic relationships between two scientists. Such pairs or duos achieve success by establishing what I will call a "scientific duopoly." Like twins, there are two types of scientific duopolies - the conjoined type and the separated type. The conjoined duopoly is exemplified by Rodgers and Hammerstein and the separated duopoly by Matisse and Picasso. Let me explain. In a conjoined duopoly, two scientists work together intensely on the same problem in the same laboratory over many years in much the same way that Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborated daily for 19 years to produce the world's most beloved musicals. According to Richard Rodgers, the secret to their success was their ability to think aloud and trade ideas in a constant dialogue, which allowed them to quickly get rid of the many bad ideas so that the rare good ones could be discovered.

Overview
Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, Inc.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation is to enlarge public awareness, appreciation, and understanding of promising achievements in medical science in order to increase public support for research. The Foundation rests on the belief that only scientific investigation, and knowledge of basic human biology and disease processes, are the most reliable, efficient means by which to achieve prolongation of life and reduction in human suffering. The centerpiece activity of the Foundation is an annual awards program, which recognizes stunning achievements in basic and clinical research, as well as significant public service in behalf of medical science.
