The March of Dimes Story The Nobel Laureates
Over the years, several scientists connected with the March of Dimes have won the Nobel Prize. Among them are:
Dr. Linus Pauling: discovered relationship between molecular structure newborn screening and human diseases.
Dr. John F. Enders, Dr. Thomas Weller and Dr. Frederick Robbins: developed tissue culture method for growing polio virus. Dr. James D. Watson: identified double helix structure of DNA. Dr. Max Delbruck: showed how genes direct normal development and mutations cause abnormal development. Dr. D. Carleton Gajdusek: discovered role of unconventional infectious agents in certain rare degenerative brain disorders. Dr. Joseph L. Goldstein: identified cellular cause of familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disorder causing very high cholesterol in the blood. Dr. Edward B. Lewis and Dr. Eric F. Wieschaus: identified master genes that control early structural development of the body.

A Word From the Gallery It's not every day that I post things of a religious context. Honestly, religion and comedy rarely have reason to mix. There aren't too many things within religion or throughout religious history that can make you stand up and say, "Damn that's funny!" Inquisition, not funny. Holocaust, not funny. Jesus on the cross, not funny. Catholic priests abusing young boys, not funny. Catholic priests advertising themselves in naked pictures on the Internet - ok, that's funny. But, sometimes perspective is important. Today, we talk about Muslims and Jews. Now, I'm no expert (ok - I am an expert, but its funnier the other way) but it seems to me that there is a great number of Muslim nations who oppress their people and want the Jews dead. It seems to me, there are a lot of Jews who want to be left alone and go back to their job of being entertainement lawyers and wondering when their daughter is going to find a nice Jewish boy and settle down. And would some grandchildren be too much to ask for while I can still carry them, you know my back goes out and my chronic gout and you don't mind getting me a cup of Sanka do you - not that I want to be a bother.

To the President of the United States and Members of the United States Congress:
There is a broad consensus supporting the President's National Bioethics Advisory Commission's proposal to ban the creation of a human being by somatic nuclear transplants. The Commission urged that such a ban should not deliberately or inadvertently interfere with biomedical research that is critical to the understanding and eventual prevention of human disease. To that end, we the undersigned endorse the statement on cloning from the American Society for Cell Biology. If legislation is deemed to be necessary, we respectfully urge you to ensure that it be limited to the cloning of human beings, and does not include language that impedes critical ongoing and potential new research. Sincerely,

Honorary Degrees Recipients for Convocation 2001 At its Centennial Convocation, The Rockefeller University will award honorary degrees to six scientists who have made important contributions to their respective areas of science. Below are biographies of the recipients.
Presented by Hermann Steller Drosophila revolutionized the study of animal development, will be presented with the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, for her contributions to the field of biology. She received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her work with Eric Wieschaus, in which they conducted a screen for mutations disrupting the formation of the body plan of the Drosophila embryo. The two researchers were able to identify a large number of relevant mutations and sort them into a functional hierarchy, reflecting a stepwise refinement of the body plan. Their work represented the first systematic genetic dissection of the development of an organism, and it inaugurated a new era in developmental biology. Physics Freeman J. Dyson

UT SOUTHWESTERN NOBEL LAUREATE NAMED TRUSTEE OF HOWARD HUGHES MEDICAL INSTITUTE
DALLAS - Oct. 8, 2002 - Dr. Joseph Goldstein, Nobel laureate and chairman of molecular genetics at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, has been elected a trustee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, Md. He is one of 10 trustees of the HHMI, a national philanthropic organization that promotes medical research. HHMI annually invests more than $440 million in biomedical research and disburses more than $100 million each year for science education and scientific career development through its grants program. "I am delighted and honored to work with an organization like HHMI that supports the very best in biomedical research in a very generous way," said Goldstein, who shared the 1985 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine with fellow UT Southwestern scientist Dr. Michael Brown for their discovery of the underlying mechanism of cholesterol metabolism. Their work continues to focus on cholesterol regulation and its role in disease. Goldstein has served on the HHMI Medical Advisory Board since 1985, becoming its chairman in 1995. He also served on its Scientific Review Board from 1978 to 1984.
