Historia de la Medicina
El Premio Nobel en
1911 Allvar Gullstrand.
1912 Alexis Carrel. Francés. Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research New York, NY, USA (1873 - 1944)

From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent. T oday marks the 100th anniversary of when the first Nobel Prizes were awarded. Ever since, they have been a subject of great interest and debate. Alfred Nobel died on Dec. 10 1896. When his will was opened it was found that he had donated his considerable wealth to creating the prizes that bear his name. Five prizes were mentioned: physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace; and four prize-awarding institutions named: the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (for physics and chemistry), the Karolinska Institutet (for physiology or medicine), the Swedish Academy (for literature) and a group appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, later called "The Norwegian Nobel Committee" (for peace). Sweden and Norway were then tied together in a union. Since the creation of the Nobel prizes, more than 650 medals and diplomas have been given away in the original prize areas. A prize in economic sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel was established by the Bank of Sweden in 1968. Most of these prizes are connected with scientific breakthroughs, literary masterpieces and attempts to make peace in a violent century.

(source)
Born 5 June 1900; died 8 Feb 1979.
Hungarian-born British electrical engineer who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1971 for his invention of holography, a system of lensless, three-dimensional photography that has many applications. He first conceived the idea of holography in 1947 using conventional filtered-light sources. Because such sources had limitations of either too little light or too diffuse, holography was not commercially feasible until the invention of the laser (1960), which amplifies the intensity of light waves. He also did research on high-speed oscilloscopes, communication theory, physical optics, and television. Gabor held more than 100 patents. Ruth Benedict
(EB) Born 5 June 1887; died 17 Sep 1948.
Warder Clyde Allee
Born 5 June 1885; died 18 Mar 1955.
American zoologist and ecologist noted for his research on social behaviour, aggregations, and distribution of animals in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. His research demonstrated that an unconscious drive existed among many species of animals for their fellow individuals, such that undercrowding was detrimental to some animals. Allee also noted what he called "protocooperation," an unconscious cooperation among animals. He believed this evolved in the higher animals to become both unconscious and conscious cooperation creating levels of community organization. Allvar Gullstrand

Nobel Prizes in Neuroscience
Part I
The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious honors that a scientist can be awarded. This article summarizes of the Nobel Prize-wining work by people who changed our view of the nervous system through their research and discoveries.

"in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system"
Camillo Golgi (Italy) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Santiago Ramon y Cajal (Spain) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Cajal and Golgi shared the Nobel Prize for their tremendous contribution to our understanding o the anatomical structure of the brain. Interestingly, they both had different theories about the nature of contacts between nerve cell. Despite this, each scientists produced a large body of work and refined techniques histological techniques impacted future generations of neuroanatomists. Some of this work is described in a previous feature article

"for his work on the dioptrics of the eye"
Allvar Gullstrand (Sweden) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
This price was award for the furtherance of our understanding of the optic principles of the eye and its function in vision.

"for his work on the physiology and pathology of the vestibular apparatus"
