Hahn, Otto
German physical chemist who discovered nuclear fission (see nuclear energy). In 1938 with Fritz Strassmann (1902-1980), he discovered that uranium nuclei split when bombarded with neutrons. Hahn did not participate in the resultant development of the atom bomb. Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1944.
In 1918, Hahn and Lise Meitner discovered the longest-lived isotope of a new element which they called protactinium, and in 1921 they discovered nuclear isomers - radioisotopes with nuclei containing the same subatomic particles but differing in energy content and half-life.
Hahn was born in Frankfurt-am-Main and studied at Marburg. From 1904 to 1906 he worked in London under William Ramsay Ernest Rutherford.

Book: Russell LISA MEITNER the stolen nobel Think you are jewish woman in Germany in the late '20s, and you happen to be the first scientist in the word to recognize nuclear fission. Do you think you would get much credit for that? Or is it more likely that your german male collaborator will ? This is the story of Lisa Meitner, the wrong person in the wrong moment of history. The daughter of a lawyer, with an instinct for science, was the first woman to get a PhD in physics at the University of Vienna. Then she moved to Berlin. She studied with giants like Boltzmann and Plank. Among many hurdles, she became professor in Berlin, and started working on radioactivity with Otto Hahn. In 1917, working with Otto Hahn, she isolated the most stable isotope of the element protactinium; she also investigated the disintegration products of radium, thorium, and actinium and the behavior of beta rays.

Some have received due recognition with various awards and membership in prestigious societies; some even have won that most coveted of honors, the Nobel Prize. For her years of partnership with Otto Hahn and her elucidation of nuclear fission, physicist Lise Meitner should have been a co-recipient of Hahn's 1944 Nobel. In Lise Meitner and the Dawn of the Nuclear Age , Patricia Rife tells the story of this remarkable woman, and tries to answer why the honor of the Nobel was denied her. Meitner was born in Vienna in 1878. Her father was a lawyer, her mother a musician: both were of Jewish ancestry, a fact which would profoundly influence Meitner's career. As a child, Meitner was especially interested in mathematics and science. Higher education was not easily attainable for women, but Meitner received her father's permission to attend the University of Vienna. At age 23, she was the first woman admitted to the university's physics lectures, and 5 years later she was granted a doctorate in physics. By this time, she had published two research papers in the Proceedings of the Vienna Academy of Sciences. When the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry opened in 1912, Meitner was the first woman physicist on staff. She held a "guest" unpaid position while Hahn was made chair of an independent department for radioactivity research. During the First World War, she volunteered as an x-ray technician for the Austrian Army; Hahn served in the German infantry. After the war, Meitner was invited to become the first woman faculty member in the physics department of the University of Berlin. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she continued her research on radioactive elements and published numerous papers. In 1924, she was the first woman to receive a Liebnitz award, and the American Association to Aid Women in Science award celebrated her achievements as a woman scientist. In 1925, she received the Ignaz Lieben award from the Vienna Academy of Sciences. From 1924 to 1934, the research team of Meitner and Hahn was nominated each year for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

To: From: Subject: Professor Michael Alley Cindy Reese CTR Request to Research How Credit Was Awarded for the Discovery of Nuclear Fission
For my EPD 397 project, please grant me permission to study the way in which credit has been awarded for the discovery of nuclear fission. Although Otto Hahn received the 1946 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery, several people assert that Lise Meitner and Fritz Strassman should have also received credit. In my research, I will attempt to discern how credit should have been bestowed.
This topic meets the criteria for a successful topic in this course. First, I am interested in the topic. As a nuclear engineering student, I realize that the discovery of nuclear fission was perhaps the single most important discovery this century in my field. As a woman scientist, I am also deeply interested in the successes and challenges faced by other women scientists. A second way in which this topic meets the criteria is that it can be quickly researched. A computer search in the library has revealed many sources available on this topic. Attached to this memo is a summary of one such source, Lise Meitner: A Life in Physics by Ruth Sime.
