I was born in San Jose, California on June 18, 1932, the first of six children of Robert and Dorothy Herschbach. My father was then a building contractor and later a rabbit breeder. His family had lived in this part of California for three generations; although our surname comes from a pair of villages in the Rhine Valley, most of his immediate ancestors were of English or Irish origin. My mother's family had moved to San Jose from Illinois when she was a young girl; most of her known ancestors were of German, Dutch, or French origin.
In my boyhood we lived in what was then a rural area of fruit orchards, only a few miles outside San Jose. For years I milked a cow, fed the pigs and chickens, and during summers picked prunes, apricots, and walnuts. From an early age I loved to read but was also very involved in outdoor activities, scouting, and sports. My interest in science was excited at age nine by an article on astronomy in National Geographic;

Herschbach, Dudley R.,
in full DUDLEY ROBERT HERSCHBACH (b. June 18, 1932, San Jose, Calif., U.S.), American chemist and educator who, with Yuan T. Lee and John C. Polanyi , was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1986 for his pioneering use of molecular beams to analyze chemical reactions. Herschbach attended Stanford University (B.S., M.S.) and received his Ph.D. in chemical physics from Harvard University in 1958. He taught at the University of California at Berkeley from 1959 to 1963 and at Harvard University from 1963, becoming Baird professor of science there in 1976. In an attempt to discover in detail the changes that occur in chemical reactions, Herschbach applied a technique that was then becoming popular in elementary particle physicsmolecular beam scattering. He invented what is known as the "crossed molecular beam technique," a technique in which beams of molecules are brought together at supersonic speed under carefully controlled conditions. This procedure enabled a detailed, molecule-by-molecule examination of the chemical reaction event.

Herschbach, Dudley R. Donald Menzel of the Harvard Observatory. For the next few years, I regularly made star maps and snuck out at night to make observations from a locust tree in our back yard. When I attended Campbell High School, I took all the science and mathematics courses offered. Chemistry I found at first puzzling and then most intriguing, thanks to John Meischke, a superb teacher. At the time, I was at least as interested in football and other sports; perhaps that presaged my later pursuit of molecular collisions. Like most of my classmates, I did not expect to attend college; none of my known relatives had graduated from a university. However, my teachers and coaches presumed I would go. Indeed, I received offers of football scholarships from some universities to which I had not even applied for admission. My Doctoral Thesis, done under E. Bright Wilson, Jr., was titled: "Internal Rotation and Microwave Spectroscopy". This presented theoretical calculations and experiments dealing with hindered internal rotation of methyl groups. The height of the hindering barrier could be accurately determined because the observed spectra were very sensitive to tunneling between equivalent potential mimima. Much that shaped my later research I learned from Bright Wilson and other faculty, especially George Kistiakowsky and Bill Klemperer, or from fellow students, especially Jerry Swalen, Victor Laurie and Larry Krisher.

Nobel Cruise: Laureates Step on Board for Science Fairs
By Paul Smaglik Winning the Nobel Prize automatically gives laureates a platform. This month the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) provided seven Nobelists with an additional floating onea 40-foot yacht on the Delaware River. On May 4 the Lady Maureen sailed between Philadelphia, site of ISEF's first and 50th fairs, and Camden, N.J., home of the Coriell Institute, one of the fair's sponsors. It also served as a stage for seven laureates to encourage more scientists to get involved in informal science education. More scientists are becoming aware of their need to reach out beyond the university, several laureates agreed in separate interviews. "The National Academy of Sciences used to be the Mount Olympus where the scientists would converse among the clouds," notes Dudley R. Herschbach , Harvard University chemistry professor and 1986 laureate. "That's changing under [NAS president] Bruce Alberts ." In a recent internal NAS questionnaire asking members to prioritize the organization's activities, 80 percent of the respondents put enhancing public understanding of science high on the list, "a percentage considerably higher even than 'increasing funding,'" Herschbach says.

July 6, 2000
President William Jefferson Clinton The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20502 Dear Mr. President: We urge you not to make the decision to deploy an anti-ballistic missile system during the remaining months of your administration. The system would offer little protection and would do grave harm to this nation's core security interests. We and other independent scientists have long argued that anti-ballistic missile systems, particularly those attempting to intercept reentry vehicles in space, will inevitably lose in an arms race of improvements to offensive missiles. North Korea has taken dramatic steps toward reconciliation with South Korea. Other dangerous states will arise. But what would such a state gain by attacking the United States except its own destruction? While the benefits of the proposed anti-ballistic missile system are dubious, the dangers created by a decision to deploy are clear. It would be difficult to persuade Russia or China that the United States is wasting tens of billions of dollars on an ineffective missile system against small states that are unlikely to launch a missile attack on the U.S. The Russians and Chinese must therefore conclude that the presently planned system is a stage in developing a bigger system directed against them. They may respond by restarting an arms race in ballistic missiles and having missiles in a dangerous "launch-on-warning" mode.
