Born 12 Aug 1897; died 6 Apr 1963.
Russian-American astronomer known for his contributions to stellar spectroscopy, notably the discovery of the widespread distribution of hydrogen and other elements in inter-stellar space (1938). He was a fourth generation astronomer, the great-grandson of Friedrich Struve. His education was interrupted by World War I, and the disorder following the Russian Revolution caused him to emigrate to the USA in 1921. He joined the staff of Yerkes Observatory, Wisc., where he became director in 1932. He also founded and directed the McDonald Observatory, where a telescope is named for him. Polish-born Israeli archaeologist who identified the antiquity of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Born 12 Aug 1887; died 4 Jan 1961.
Austrian theoretical physicist who contributed to the wave theory of matter and to other fundamentals of quantum mechanics. He shared the 1933 Nobel Prize for Physics with the British physicist P.A.M. Dirac. Vincent Bendix Born 12 Aug 1882; died 27 Mar 1945.

together with Peter Doherty "For research on the biochemical mechanism with which the immune system recognizes and destroys virus-infected cells." Born 6.1.1944 in Basel In 1996, Professor Rolf M. Zinkernagel, Director of the Institute for Experimental Immunology, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine together with the Australian researcher Peter C. Doherty. They were both honoured for discovering how the human immune system can distinguish between infected and non-infected cells. Today Zinkernagel works, together with Professor Hans Hengartner and 30 colleagues, on so-called autoimmune diseases such as juvenile diabetes and multiple sclerosis. At the University of Zurich: since 1979 Professor of Experimental Immunology
