Videos Statement of 100 Nobel Laureates OSLO, Norway-December 7, 2001 (OTVNewswire) At the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium here yesterday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates have issued a brief but dire warning of the "profound dangers" facing the world. Their statement predicts that our security depends on immediate environmental and social reform. The following is the text of their statement: THE STATEMENT: The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust.

FIU women have a voice in the future of women in higher education for women. Women at FIU are now preparing to participate in a national teleconference to set an agenda to transform higher educational institutions to better meet the professional and educational needs of women. Now is the time to become involved and add your individual voice to our community of voices. Together, we can explore ways to access women's talents by building on the strength of our diversity, breaking down barriers, and creating a campus environment that will encourage all people to live up to their full potential.

against the aggression on Croatia
Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude.
An Appeal by 104 Nobel Laureates
FOR PEACE IN CROATIA
During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war.
  • We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.

The Dispossessed
by 100 Nobel Laureates
The following statement was released on December 7, 2001, by 100 Nobel Prize winners to coincide with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Nobel prizes. Although the statement began circulating among the laureates last summer, most of them signed it after September 11. The most profound danger to world Peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in cooperative international action, legitimized by democracy. It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.

Jocelyn Bell Burnell Jocelyn Bell Burnell's amazing discovery was confiscated by her supervisor who then won the Pulitzer Prize for it. That's a bit simplistically put, but does describe essentially what happened.
Born 07-15-1943, Jocelyn Bell Burnell, British astronomer and educator discovered pulsating radio stars or pulsars at age 24. The discovery enabled her supervisor Antony Hewish to win the Nobel Prize in physics in 1974.
She received no credit from the Nobel committee although the year before the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia had awarded the prestigious Michelson Medal to both Hewish and Bell.
At the time and in subsequent interviews, Bell (who wanted to continue on the field) said that it would have been unseemly for a 24-year-old to receive such honors.
Hewish made his theory announcement in 1968 after his recommendation that JBB BURY her pulsar discovery information in the appendix of her doctoral dissertation
Bell has proved her discovery at 24 was no fluke by becoming only one of two women in Great Britain to hold the position of full professor of physics. She has received a number of the most prestigious awards in astronomy.

    Jocelyn Bell Burnell
    Compiled by Peter Ellis
We often dream of making a revolutionary discovery but very few scientists actually do it especially in the first years of their careers, but that is what happened to Jocelyn Bell, the discoverer of pulsars. The young astronomer
Jocelyn was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1943. She became interested in astronomy while still very young because her father, an architect, designed Armagh Observatory near where she lived.
Later she went to school in York and then studied science at Glasgow University. After achieving her degree in 1965 she wanted to do research in the relatively new area of radio astronomy. First build your telescope Jocelyn wanted to study quasars, groups of stars that are far beyond our galaxy. Quasars give out radio waves, which seem to twinkle as they pass through the dust and gas in the Solar System. She needed a special kind of radio telescope designed by Antony Hewish, her supervisor at Cambridge University, and spent the first two years of her PhD course building it. Radio waves have a much longer wavelength than visible light. To form an image of the radio source the radio telescope must cover an area considerably larger than the wavelength of the radio waves. Jocelyn's radio-telescope consisted of over two thousand separate radio receivers spread over four acres of fields - quite a task to build! At last in July 1967 the telescope was ready and began churning out rolls of paper bearing the ink traces of the radio signals.
