UCT home page Fourth edition of Noakes’ runner’s bible launched A SK any South African runner whether they’ve read Professor Tim Noakes’ The Lore of Running and the chances are good that they will own a well-thumbed (and probably sweat-grained) version of this classic. This Thursday sees the Cape Town launch of the fourth edition of Noakes’ "runner’s bible", a thoroughly revised version of some 1 300 pages, offering the same comprehensive overview of running that made the first edition in 1985 such a best seller. The book covers all the important aspects of running, from training regimes and race strategies to analyses of nutrition and ergogenic aids, including banned substances. It also examines the perennial mystery of why some people run faster than others (consider the Kenyan and Ethiopian long-distance runners). But working closely with his staff, graduate and postgraduate students (each is identified in the book), Noakes has included some groundbreaking information in this edition.

SIR ARCHIBALD VIVIAN HILL
Archibald Vivian Hill was born in Bristol on September 26,1886. His early education was at Blundell's School , Tiverton, whence he obtained scholarships to Trinity College , Cambridge. Here he studied mathematics and took the Mathematical Tripos, being Third Wrangler (1907). After graduating, he was urged to take up physiology by his teacher, Dr. (later Sir) Walter Morley Fletcher.
Hill started his research work in 1909. It was due to J. N. Langley , Head of the Department of Physiology at that time that Hill took up the study on the nature of muscular contraction. Langley drew his attention to the important (later to become classic) work carried out by Fletcher and Hopkins on the problem of lactic acid in muscle, particularly in relation to the effect of oxygen upon its removal in recovery. During his initial studies Hill made use of the Blix' apparatus, obtaining his first knowledge of the subject from papers of this Swedish physiologist. This led him to study the dependence of heat production on the length of muscle fibre (a relation later developed by Starling in his investigation of the mechanism of the heart beat).

, Hartridge, and others.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
"Physiology or Medicine is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine." Historia de la Medicina
La historia del Premio Nobel 1921 - 1930
Sir Archibald Vivian Hill. Inglaterra, London University (1886-1977). Otto Meyerhoff. University of Heidelberg, Alemania (1884-1951)

1923- Sir Frederick Grant Banting. Toronto University, Canada (1891 - 1941)
John James Richard Macleod. Toronto University, Toronto, Canada (1876 - 1935).

"por el descubrimiento de la insulina"
Sir Frederick Grant Banting trabajando con Charles Best, obtuvieron por primera vez insulina de un extracto pancreático. Posteriormente, trabajando en el laboratorio del fisiólogo escocés Richard McLeod, pudieron aislar la hormona lo suficientemente pura como para aplicarla en los pacientes diabéticos.
