New Roads
During the last academic year several roads in the Science area have been named after eminent scientists. Roads adjoining Linacre have taken the names of Abraham, Florey Hinshelwood, Sibthorp and Sherard . For those who are not familiar with these names, Professor Sir Edward Abraham , who was an Honorary Fellow of Linacre, and whose obituary was in Issue 18 of Linacre News , was a noted biochemist who worked on the development of pencillin and of cephalosporins. He was a colleague of Howard Florey, Professor of Pathology at Oxford, who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945 for his work on pencillin therapy. Sir Cyril Norman Hinshelwood was Dr Lee’s Professor of Chemistry at the University in 1937-1964. John Sibthorp, Sherardian Professor of Botany at Oxford University, was the 18th century overseer of the Flora Graeca . William Sherard, member of the Council of the Royal Society, travelled widely in Europe, in 1689 publishing Schola Botanica , a list of plants in the Jardin du Roi in Paris, and Paul Hermann’s Paradisus Batavus in 1698. Sherard also endowed the chair of Botany at Oxford University.

Actually, how long have people been active in science? The answer is the same for both women and men as long as we have been human. One of the defining marks of humanity is our ability to affect and predict our environment. Science - the creation of structure for our world - technology - the use of structure in our world - and mathematics - the common language of structure - all have been part of our human progress, through every step of our path to the present. Women and men together have researched and solved each emerging need.

A Trail of Research in Sulfur Chemistry and Metabolism and Related Fields

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Nikolai Nikolaevic Semenov The Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1956 Nikolai Nikolaevic Semenov was born in Saratov on April 3, 1896. He graduated from Petrograd University in 1917 and in 1920 he took charge of the electron phenomena laboratory of the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute. Semenov's outstanding work on the mechanism of chemical transformation includes an exhaustive analysis of the application of the chain theory to varied reactions and, more especially, to combustion processes. He proposed a theory of degenerate branching which led to a better understanding of the phenomena associated with the induction periods of oxidation processes. Semenov has made valuable contributions to the field of molecular physics; he has also carried out investigations on electron phenomena, dielectric breakdown and the propagation of explosive waves. He married Natalaya Nikolaevna Semenova; they have one son and one daughter. Nikolay Nikolaevich Semenov died in 1986.

Below is a list of Nobel Laureates, starting with the most recent, that were either Russian or Soviet citizens at the time of their award. There is also a large number of Laureates that were born in Russia or the USSR but had relocated, either as children or far into their careers, to other countries at the time of their award. We have attempted to list the country correctly - Russia or the USSR - depending on the status of the country at the time of the laureate's birth and/or award.
