He was knighted in 1972. Hodgkin was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. After conducting radar research (1939-45) for the British Air Ministry, he joined the faculty at Cambridge, where he worked (1945-52) with Huxley on measuring the electrical and chemical behaviour of individual nerve fibres. By inserting microelectrodes into the giant nerve fibres of the squid Loligo forbesi, they were able to show that the electrical potential of a fibre during conduction of an impulse exceeds the potential of the fibre at rest, contrary to the accepted theory, which postulated a breakdown of the nerve membrane during impulse conduction. They knew that the activity of a nerve fibre depends on the fact that a large concentration of potassium ions is maintained inside the fibre, while a large concentration of sodium ions is found in the surrounding solution. Sir Alan Lloyd Hodgkin nació en Banbury, Oxfordshire, en 1914. Ya durante su época de estudiante de Biología y Química en la Universidad de Cambridge, Hodgkin comenzó a interesarse por los fundamentos de la conducción nerviosa, donde ambas materias convergían para explicar uno de los grandes problemas de la fisiología. Inició algunos experimentos bastante sencillos en los nervios de ranas y continuó en la misma línea durante varios años. De forma accidental descubrió que se podían extraer fácilmente las fibras nerviosas individualizadas de un cangrejo de tierra, de modo que resultaban apropiadas para realizar experimentos pese a su reducido tamaño (0,03 mm). Durante el período de 1937 a 1938 Hodgkin pasó varias semanas en los EEUU, donde tuvo ocasión de diseccionar y estudiar las fibras nerviosas del calamar, cuyas dimensiones superaban a las del cangrejo (hasta más de 1 mm de diámetro). En 1938 regresaba a Cambridge, donde empezaba un año después su colaboración con A.F. Huxley, a quien tuvo la fortuna de tener como alumno. La guerra, como a tantos otros científicos de la época, le obligó a interrumpir sus investigaciones sobre el sistema nervioso. Desde 1939 hasta 1945 trabajó en el desarrollo del radar para el Ministerio del Aire. Al terminar la contienda, regresó a Cambridge, primero como conferenciante y más tarde como director adjunto de investigación. Reanudó entonces sus trabajos con el profesor Sir Andrew Huxley, investigando la 'teoría iónica' sobre la transmisión de mensajes al cerebro a través de las células nerviosas.
