To: blackj@bigmagic.com Try this one! Too freaky is right!! 2% or 98% This is strange...can you figure it out? Are you the 2% or 98% of the population? Follow the instructions! NO PEEKING AHEAD! * Do the following exercise, guaranteed to raise an eyebrow. * There's no trick or surprise. * Just follow these instructions, and answer the questions one at a time and as quickly as you can! * Again, as quickly as you can but don't advance until you've done each of them...really. * Now, scroll down (but not too fast, you might miss something). Think of a number from 1 to 10 Multiply that number by 9 If the number is a 2-digit number, add the digits together Now subtract 5 Determine which letter in the alphabet corresponds to the number you ended up with(example: 1=a, 2=b, 3=c, etc.) Think of a country that starts with that letter Remember the last letter of the name of that country Think of the name of an animal that starts with that letter Remember the last letter in the name of that animal Think of the name of a fruit that starts with that letter Are you thinking of a Kangaroo in Denmark eating an Orange?

This isn't humour, but I didn't know where else to put it.
Today, at a time when fundamentalist Islamic extremism is affecting so much of our world, I think it's interesting to note the statistical difference between Arabs and Jews shown below. I think that if the fanatics spent less time on politics and religion, and more on 'useful endeavours' (lots of room for discussion here!), it would be a good thing for their people and for everyone. As it is, they have only managed to accomplish a lot of chanting and rocking about ARAB/ISLAMIC NOBEL WINNERS JEWISH NOBEL WINNERS 19.6% of World's Population

STANFORD PHYSICIST WINS NOBEL
He Gets News Via Mickey Mouse Phone
Stanford's Robert C. Laughlin got the news he had won the Nobel Prize for physics in a particularly unscientific way - his13-year-old roused him after taking the 2 a.m. call on his Mickey Mouse telephone. "Hey, dad, there's some guy from Sweden who wants to talk to you," Laughlin said a few hours after he had been awakened early yesterday, recalling the wee-hours conversation with his son, Todd. The "guy" was calling to let Laughlin know that he, Horst L. Stormer of Germany and Daniel C. Tsui, a native of China who is now an American citizen, would share the $978,000 prize for their discoveries of how electrons interact to make the universe work as it does. At a news conference at Stanford, a beaming, tweed-jacketed Laughlin, his gray hair disheveled, accepted the applause and cheers of friends, family and co-workers, including two pervious Stanford Nobel lauriates. Laughlin, 47, tried to explain the significance of what he had accomplished, but his arcane lesson was met by a number of blank faces. He was asked if the discovery would have an impact on our everyday life.

TLS: "Robert Hofstadter" Stanford University, Stanford, California, 1980 August 1. To Edwin Strassburger, Kew Gardens Hills, N.Y. In part: "I do not consider myself an expert on nuclear energy. However I think it is a very safe type of energy and one needed by this country as well as other countries. I consider both fission energy and fusion energy as our most important future sources of energy...." Hofstadter studied the atomic structure of protons and neutrons on the large linear accelerator at Stanford and determined their electromagnetic form factors.
